Some of these rates are crazy.
With the 2017 rates being announced yesterday, we are looking at booking our trip for next Mardi Gras.
Think we decided on Coronado Springs Resort... couldnt fathom paying the quoted rate at the Contemporary or Polynesian. Can afford it, but with kids and only 4 days at the parks, we wont be in the room that much.
The other deluxes do not interest us (Y&BC, Wl, etc)
Should I look at any other mid level resorts..CBR, PO, etc.?

Port Orleans French Quarter. Better resort than Coronado. Also can ride the boats to disney springs.

You get much better than the moderates and the same as the deluxes without the price tag. You get every benefit that the other Disney resorts get.

The only difference is that you won't be able to book a package with tickets included. You can book through many other travel sites though.

Lol I am in the exact same boat as you. I wanted to go Deluxe but the new rates are insane. Looking at Coronado, French Quarter, Caribbean beach and the family suite at Art of Animation (which is more than the moderates but is a much larger room)

I saw through Costco they have deals on the Swan and Dolphin, but I don't like the idea of paying $17 a day to park there as well. though Universal does this.

My itenarary right now is to leave Saturday the 25th, arrive Sunday 26th AM. Check into hotel and relax and enjoy the property and play put-put and visit family in Orlando. Monday Magic kingdom, Tues and Wednesday see what we want to see in the other three parks. Check out Wednesday early and go to Disney last day, while the Mrs and kids are at the park I will go check into Cabana bay at Universal. At night we drive to the new hotel. Go to Universal Thurs and Friday, Check out Saturday. Go to Daytona and/or St Aug for Saturday, drive home Sunday.

Renting a minivan for the week for $188 from Costco.

Looking at a three day park hopper at that time being $1595, yet the cheapeset room package with a three day park hopper ;three adults ( a ten year old is a Disney adult) and one child is $1796 so the discount for staying on property does exist.
I sometimes prefer staying off property as you can get a really nice two or three bedroom condo for $150- 200 and a shite room at Disney is at least $135. I kind of want to stay on property as it will be our last time at Disney for a while. Now that they are older we will go to more City focused travel, like SF, NYC and DC. This is the last time they will experience Disney as young kids.

I'm looking right now at $2100 to $2400 for the three nights and the four hoppers at a Moderate and $1800 at a value. To me the moderate is worth the premium.

Universal we are looking at a $869 2 day pass for four or $1783 for the room and tickets. This is a family suite the regular room would be $1500.

I ca get a condo for six nights for $725 if we stay off property, but friends and family in Orlando say you have to stay on Property to get into Harry Potter land early and take ride the rides without waiting hours for them.

With food, even being on a budget it's still at least a $5,000 vacation.

everyone says the Orleans resorts are the best moderates for the price, but I don't want to escape New Orleans during Mardi Gras only to stay at a New Orleans themed hotel.

I felt the same.

family suite at Art of Animation

We stayed here last time. No complaints, and the bus service was quicker than All Star resorts.
We stayed in the Lion King suites and the bus stop was very convenient.
All other themed areas were a lot farther away from the bus area.

Lion King is the one I liked, the Miss is saying that her friends said the Art of Animation is too packed and big and they liked the Caribbean. But to me it looks so sprawled out.
But it's only $2073 for the days I need including tickets, same dates the All Stars are $1858 so that seems like a good price for a moderate.

I really wanted a Savanna View at Animal Kingdom.
But man I just can't justify $400 a night for a standard hotel room.

The caribbean has that drop down bed which is cool too so the kids can each hae their own bed.

We went this past Mardi Gras, they had a cheerleader convention and it might have been Brazilian vacation time.

They upgraded us to Polynesian from Caribeaan Beach because of cheerleader competitions.

It will be hard to stay anywhere else after Polynesian but there is no way I would pay that price for it.

That's how they "get" you. After staying in a deluxe, it's hard to go back to the mods or values.

We LOVE the Wilderness Lodge but it gets pricey for a quick trip down to "The World"

When we go to Disney, we are on a bus no later than 7:30 am and not back to the resort until after 10 pm every day, then we go home.

For us, there is absolutely no value in a deluxe resort, as we would never get to enjoy any of the amenities they offer.

With our two kids, we have been staying the last few times at either Pop or one of the All Stars. Everyone likes to complain about the buses... but honestly unless you are going at a super peak time, we have never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a bus.

As the kids get older, we will probably switch to moderates only because the bathroom situation is a bit easier and the two beds are queens vs doubles in the value resorts.

Maybe as the kids get older and aren't as enamored with the parks, we would stay at the deluxe resorts.

I mean, it just depends on the person really. I have no problem hopping back to a moderate or even value from a deluxe the prior trip. We did the Poly in January (easily my favorite resort) and are doing POFQ in Sept. Sure we're going to miss the convenience of the monorail, but the cost savings easily justify it to me. I've done Wilderness Lodge, Pop Century, French Quarter, Polynesian, Yacht Club, Caribbean Beach and All Star Movies. I'd stay at any of them again except for the All Star. frick that.

I know people that have stayed at Coronado and enjoyed it....but it is a convention resort so there are a few small things different there than at non-convention resorts. For instance, my sister and brother-in-law stayed there in May. They ordered diapers and other things from Amazon and had them shipped directly to the resort instead of packing them in luggage. Disney did charge them a small fee for handling...at non-convention resorts they apparently don't charge the fee.

Correct. You get charged a fee at the convention resorts but not at the others. We ship a bunch of stuff over to the resort so that we don't have to pack it. It is waiting for us when we get there.

We love Pop Century but the big beef I have with the values are the beds made of when seems to be granite or maybe diamond. They are horrendously uncomfortable to both of us. The extra pillows and eggcrates don't help much for my aching body after a long day in the parks.

Look into renting DVC points. You can get studios at deluxe resorts for the cost of a regular room at a moderate resort.

LINK

Been using David's for years and although his prices have come up some, it's still the best route for us.

I just booked a split stay at The Boardwalk for three nights and Animal Kingdom Lodge for two nights and it cost me about $1300 or so.

Looking at the rental point chart you can get something at The Boardwalk or Beach Club for under or around $2k for the week. Step up to Bay Lake or Grand Floridian for less than $1000.

The major difference between the sudios and the one bedroom is with the studio you won't get a full kitchen or a washer and dryer. BUT the rooms are still bigger than standard rooms at moderate resorts and come with a kitchenette that the regular resort rooms don't have.

If you look at renting something at Port Orleans (standard view) you're looking at about $1800 or so for the room.

with renting points, how do you book ADRs and FP+?

Just the same. Once your reservation is confirmed you enter enter he confirmation # in my Disney experience and you're all set.

If you want to add a dining plan you let David's know and they can add it but as
For ADRs and FP's, there is no difference.

That would be like hitting the lotto. I have great memories of the Polynesian as a kid, but can't afford $500 a night for a basic room.
