What do those do for you?

Everything. It has your tickets, fast passes, dining plan, hotel key, etc., all there. You can even put a credit card on there to charge food, souvenirs, etc.

It also stores information about where you're from.. The haunted mansion uses it at the end for a unique experience.
It replaces the key cards and gives more options and ease of access.

Most of these answers are mostly correct.
If you're ever been on a cruise, think of the magic band as your stateroom card. Nothing is actually on the magic band...it's just an RFID piece of technology that links everything in your My Disney Experience account that can be accessed from a bracelet. I personally hate the fricking things and prefer to just get a hard key and keep it in my wallet. Some people don't carry a purse or wallet so it makes it easier for the but since I am taking my license, insurance card, credit card, cash, etc anyway, I prefer to just carry a room key the old fashion way.
The important thing to remember is that nothing goes on the magic band...you need to make sure anything you add is linked to you (and whomever elses accounts you manage) in My Disney Experience.
Make a dining reservation....make sure it's linked in MDE. Add the memory maker....make sure it's inked in MDE. Buy tickets separately from your resort...make sure you link them in MDE. Add a credit card to your profile...make sure it's linked in MDE. etc etc etc

quote:They were terrible at first. But I get it. They wanted to put everything on one piece of hardware. It could have been a card, but it's so much easier to lose a card. And kids aren't going to carry one around. Also, the accessibility of having it on your wrist leads to more use. They've come along way since the first glitches helped along by outreach to get people to understand them.

Exactly. The bands each have an RFID chip implanted inside under the Mickey icon. Any personal or card info is still stored on Disney servers. When the chip is read, the unique ID is relayed back to the appropriate system (i.e. ticketing, resort reservation) and then verified. They even use a PIN when you link a credit card for purchases over a certain $ amount for added security. Personally, I've used them numerous times and love them. It's so much more convenient to have the wristband to get in the parks, go through FastPass lines, buy a snack and then go back into my room. I never have to dig in my pockets for a card, cash, paper slip or room key. It allows me to carry very little with me into the parks meaning there's less of a chance I lose something.

I'm not sure of its been said, but you can also link your debit card to it. Essentially letting you go into Disney and lose your wallet since your key, tickets, money, and dining options and reservations are on there. Links your ride photos to your account too.

The chip in it can also help them locate a lost kid.

they are awesome: room key, park ticket, payments and rides automatically load pics to them if you have photo pass
