I see this question come up often on this board. Interestingly, a lot of Americans think that most countries outside of the US drive on the left side of the road. This simply isn't true. For the most part the only countries that drive on the left side of the road are Britain and former British colonies. The notable exception is the USVI.

Here is a link showing what countries drive on the left and right side of the road.

What side of the road do I drive on?

Never heard many people say that. Most would think the UK is the only one.

There seems to be confusion in quite a few threads when people are visiting other countries and particularly those traveling abroad for the first time.

I thought the link might be useful.

Which is always strange because you have a left-side steering column and drive on the left.

In Afghanistan it tough because the vehicle's steering wheel was on the right side but you drove on the right.

And they were all standard shifts!

Yeah, try to shift a manual transmission with your left hand on the gear shifter.

When I go to the UK or Ireland I always rent a vehicle with an automatic transmission, it's more expensive and can be tough to find at some rental agencies sometimes.

I couldn't imagine trying to stay in the correct lane AND shift with my left hand.

The stick was a non issue for me. My problem was depth perception on two lane roads and worrying I was going to take mirrors out on cars parked on the side of the road

Serious question...can you not turn left on red in these places? I ended up being the driver when I went to Ireland and did that one time. Figured it was just like our turning right at a red light. Never saw anyone else do it the week I was there, and so I made sure to just wait for the light to turn green because I wasn't sure what to do.

Its crazy how much more they charge in Ireland for an automatic.

I caught a deal in Belgium paid 450 for an automatic for 15 days.

Never had any issue staying in the right lane once there, however intersections and exiting parking lots is a different story

Hell I look the wrong way for traffic when walking.

I look both directions about three times because I get so turned around. Thankfully, in London they usually have written on the street to either "Look Left" or "Look Right".

In Indonesia we drive on the left. Steering wheel in the right side. Shifting with the left hand is easy to get used to. My only issue is turning on the wipers when I want to hit the turn signal

That's the problem I had driving on the left in Australia. I signaled way too many turns with my wipers...

Iceland and Sweden changed over from left-hand driving to right-hand driving in the 1960s.
