Costa Rica Honeymoon
Posted by elleshoo9 on 4/6/17 at 6:15 pm00
So I started the Caribbean honeymoon thread below, and I've done a lot of research on the Caribbean destinations and Belize.
I'm also intrigued by Costa Rica, the jungles look amazing. I have no clue where to start for honeymoon destinations and things to see in Costa Rica. Fiancee and I are looking for a few days of relaxation/beach time and a few days of jungle adventures. All inclusive type places are preferred.
Any suggestions on what to start looking at? Must see landmarks and nature tours?

Check out Tabacon in Arenal. They run specials that are pretty good. Rooms are nice, access to hot springs included, etc. If you do go to Arenal or Montverde, do yourselves a favor and do the Sky Trek zipline. Routinely rated best in the country.
The best hotel on the island for beaching is the Four Seasons in Peninsula Papagayo, but it is not cheap and is somewhat isolated. It's more of a destination hotel.
I will say that I don't personally think Costa Rica is that great of a beach destination. The country is great for everything else it has to offer, so make sure to get out and see as much as you can. I much prefer the Caribbean for hitting the beach.

If you go stay on the Pacific side (much nicer). Wife and I went 7yrs ago and stayed in Manuel Antonio at the Arenas Del Mar resort. Everything was first class and we had an absolute blast. The resort just included breakfast in the cost, but they had dinner and lunch a la carte. We actually preferred it like that as it allowed us to eat some great food at some local places.
It will not get more beautiful than Montezuma. There are amazing waterfall hikes and nature preserve hikes, and you're really 'in it' out there.

Ok so I discovered the Red Frog Beach Resort in Panama on the Caribbean side. Relatively inexpensive ($300 per night for the honeymoon suite with private pool). Then you can catch a 30 minute to hour flight to San Jose then drive to the Arenal area for a few more nights. This flights is only ~$500 total for two.

I didn't down vote you, but I would really do a lot of research before traveling to the Caribbean side. When I was looking into Costa Rica many moons ago I was told strongly how bad the Caribbean side was, and that was backed up by folks I spoke to when I was there.
I think it's kinda dumpy and the crime may be a bit worse.

Yea this red frog beach resort is in Bocas Del Toro which is in Panama technically.
From what I'm seeing is the area is a little "rough," and the area attracts a lot of surfer and backpacker types. I want to go, but thinking it's not worth risking a bad honeymoon experience

So which is considered the better resort...JW Marriott at Guanacaste or Los Suenos Marriott at Herradura??

I'll have to check them out. From what I've noticed, the guanacaste area seems more arid and less tropical/lush than some other beach locations further south. The Manuel Antonio park area seems very tropical with the jungle coming all the way up to the beach

Sorry for sounding like a shill for this area, but it really is everything you described. The national park is really incredible, we saw tons of wildlife including sloths and tons of monkeys. It was hilarious seeing monkeys on the beach that were going around trying to steal peoples lunches.
Another thing I would recommend is getting a driver for your trip. We had a guy we used our entire trip, I think he charged us $140 for the trip from the airport to the resort, and the same going back, however throughout our time there we used him and really just paid him a few dollars for each excursion. It really turns out to be much cheaper than using the tours through the hotel.
What hotel did you stay at?
ETA: Arenas Del Mar, I see. I'm looking at that one. How did you arrange your own driver and excursions? Trips through the hotel seem unreasonably expensive.
Also, did you do any domestic flights? I've seen flights cheaper than ground transportation, but I'm sure the prices change often

CR is gorgeous. Been a few times. Honestly, if you are concerned at all about cost of trip (because CR is expensive to do all the tours-which are awesome) go to Nicaragua. It's the same thing, but cheaper. If you go to CR, do the all day 5 event Guanacaste tour. $85 covers everything.
We ended up finding the driver by chance. A few weeks before the trip I was discussing the trip with a business associate and his brother In law was a frequent visitor down there and gave us the contact info for his driver.
I'm sure if you search the net you can find info on how other people found drivers. We used the same strategy when we went to st Lucia. Aside from saving money, you can also do the excursions at your own pace. In adddition, if you see something else that catches your eye you have the freedom to do that as well.
