My FIL is doing a house exchange next early summer for 10 days in Kent, England about 50 mins from London. Wife and I have 2 kids that will be under 4 at the time, how bad of an idea do you think it is to take them? It's not our ideal vacation at that time, but at the same time kinda feeling YOLO and we want to have a third, so after next summer she may be pregnant and that rules out Europe 2018 most likely.

Probably do like 4-6 days at the house, then 2-4 days in London, then 4-5 days else where. Thinking maybe somewhere else in the UK to keep travel easy with the kids, but Paris or France is a possibility. Obviously not doing a crazy Euro trip here.

I wouldn't do it, but to each his own. The kids will be a terror, and arent even old enough to remember it when they get older. I would wait a few years.

I'll add a positive voice to the mix...We took our one year old to Italy a year ago and will be bringing him back to Europe with us again in a couple months. I'd be lying if I told you we did as much as we used to with just the two of us - or that it was anything like it. That said, it was better than the alternative (not going at all).

We did learn some lessons and will bringing a helping hand on our next trip. It sounds like you will have that for at least part of the trip if you'll be staying with your father-in-law. The flights won't be any fun, but you'll survive.

Go for it. There will always be a reason to not travel.

I want to put a bullet in my head when I see my two-year-old niece on holidays when I go to my fam's for like two hours.

Couldn't imagine going across the world with two of those suckers.

Only if the kids are out of diapers. Otherwise it'll be a pain. We did Korea with a 1 and 4 year old. Just not worth the hassle.

Well we did a DC to Seattle flight that was 5 hours I believe holding our 2 year old on our lap, that was pretty miserable. But depending on flight costs we'll either do 3 or 4 seats. Give them some benedryl or something to help them sleep, and we'll try and do the shortest long leg we can. So either Charlotte or somewhere in the northeast, so you are looking at 6 hour flight or so. Pop in a movie at take off, give them some benedryl, and it really should not be a bad flight at all with their own seat.

4-6 days of our hotel are paid for, rental cars look pretty cheap. So we could do the trip with just the cost of airfare and rental car.

I'm not talking about doing an adult europe trip going out, going to museums, etc. But I think a kid based Euro trip could be a lot of fun.

We'll also have my FIL to help watch so my wife and I could go out on our own. Again, its not ideal but most things in life are not its what you make of it.

Do it. Travel with kids whether you are going to the beach, a theme park, Europe or Asia is travel with kids. It will be stressful, involve a lot of logistics, and ultimately not be same travel as what one would have done without kids.

However, it creates a different set of expectations, benefits, memories, and experiences.

Do it.

I live 1/2 mile from the beach. We both work, so we aren't going to take a long vacation without our kids. We've done Disney twice already two long weekends.

The alternative is not go? Outside of the flights which will suck the rest sounds pretty awesome and doable.

When my two oldest kids were ages 2 and 4, we went to Vienna and Rome. It takes planning and patience, but we never regret doing it. My oldest still remembers that trip and she's done a lot of traveling since.

Go for it! We always have taken our kids on big vacations since they were babies and they've always traveled well. Just plan ahead and be over-prepared. We were in the UK in June with our three preschool- and elementary-aged children. Things they really liked: Tower of London, London Eye, riding the tube, riding a double-decker bus, St. James Park, Princess Diana Playground in Kensington Gardens, eating at Pizza Express, the Science Museum (lots of cool demonstrations of things exploding, crafty things to make, etc.), street performers in Covent Gardens, eating at Borough Market.
I know some people can't imagine taking kids on trips like you are planning, but I couldn't imagine NOT taking them. Of course, I'm sure the experience varies greatly depending on the behavior/temperament/personality of the child (and parent) and maybe some people just know their children would ruin their vacation. Ha.

Once you decide that you're going and where exactly you'll be headed (other than London), if you need more help, let me know and I will give you more kid-friendly ideas if they're places we've visited (and if you want them!).

We are taking our 3 & 5 year old to Australia over Christmas break. It will be the first time flying for the 3 year old.

Don't travel with kids until they're closer to the 8-10 range. They won't appreciate anything until then, and everybody else on the plane wont hate you.
