Chicago for Memorial Day Weekend With Mom

Taking my mom somewhere for the long weekend to celebrate her birthday. We have narrowed it down to either San Diego or Chicago. Any advice is appreciated. I've never been to either.
ETA: Decided on Chicago. Any tips on museums, plays, sight seeing, food, and anything else is greatly appreciated.

Win-win. Both great. This is the time of year to go to Chicago.

Chicago is a great choice June-Sept...if not, San Diego which is great year round minus the gloom in May.

Been like this in Chicago. Couple nice days, but an overall shitty May of mild temperatures and rain.
In general, though, OP, there is a lot to do in Chicago during the summer months leading into September.

So if we do Chicago, we would land Friday night and leave Monday morning. I found some really fancy hotels with hilton points (super cheap too) over near the Miracle Mile. Probably gonna do that. What are your top recommendations for must see sights for first timers?

I know all the tourists do it, but seriously.. the Signature Room at the Hancock Building is just a can't miss. The view is incredible.
Arrive early. Like 4pm or so. It gets a long line during "happy hour" times, but nobody really drinks at 4pm so you can get a window seat fairly easily.

Architecture tour was really cool
Shopping down Magnificent Mile
Girl and the Goat was excellent
Pequods for pizza
Chicago beef sandwich
A lot of good steak places
Get drinks at the Hancock Tower that overlooks the city

San Diego. Much less chance of getting killed.

Chicago is the best food city that I've ever been to and it isn't really close.
Edit- Not counting NOLA because I'm eating that type of food in everyday life

It's going to be a matter of personal preference. I like San Diego much better than Chicago.
The weather is amazing in SD and it is beautiful there. We stayed on Coronado Island.
We went to Chicago last Sept. We did the typical touristy things but I just don't like the crowded big city. Still glad I went but I don't need to go back. I will go back to San Diego though.
Now granted we went to SD 15 years ago. Who knows, it may now have that crowded big city vibe I don't like.

I did this at the Shengrala (sp?) hotel in Sydney last month. I love going up into tall buildings for the view. Especially when you can just buy drinks and not have to pay to get in.

The weather is pretty shitty here in Chicago right now. 60s-low 70s, gloomy with rain most days.

Do the architecture boat tour
Grab a drink at the rooftop at London House
Italian beef sandwich and a dog at Portillo's
Eatily is great (in a few other big cities)
Deep dish i guess (I'm not a fan)
Tons of great steakhouses
Take mom to Wrigleyville and get hammered and go to the batting cages upstairs at Sluggers

If it's your first time, I would recommend the following:
- Architecture Boat Tour
- Go to top of the Willis
- Visit Millennium Park
- Short walk from Millennium to Art Institute
- Head to Museum Campus and check out Adler and Shedd
- Navy Pier for... no reason, but tourists like that place.
- West Loop for dinner(s)
- Magnificent Mile / Michigan Ave for shopping
- Top of the Hancock (Signature Room) for drinks
- Lincoln Park Zoo
- Walk Lakeshore Path
- Chicago Riverwalk
- A lot of beautiful neighborhoods north of downtown (i.e. Wicker, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Logan Square, Ravenswood, Roscoe Village)
Outside of my last suggestion of visiting its neighborhoods, this is just basic touristy stuff in Chicago.

Really? only the pizza is notable and stands out as otherworldly. portillo's is good but not nearly good enough to help qualify chicago as best food city. Chicago has a ton of steakhouses, but so does every other major city. same thing with fine dining.
Cities like NYC, SF or Los Angeles have much more diverse cuisines and are better for foodies. I'd rank NOLA ahead of chicago too.

Well I've never been to NYC, SF, or LA and put NOLA behind it because I eat that type of food every day lol. The quality of every meal I ate in Chicago was just exceptional.
