Can anyone tell me how late you can change your seat selection? I've never done it past about a day before my flight. I'm considering moving back to an empty row, but I'd like to wait as late as possible to ensure that it's still empty.

Can I still do it through the app at that point, or do I have to deal with the agent?

Deal with the agent at the counter. It's ok to interact with people and particularly people that can get you what you want.

Once you check in online and get your boarding pass you cannot change your seat. You would have to get the airport and have them do it.

This isn't entirely accurate. You can still change seat online/app after initial check-in, you just have to go through check-in process again.

Kind of off topic...

Friend of mine booked flights recently but was unable to get on the same row (row of 3 seats) with this lady and daughter. What's the likelihood that the person with that 3rd seat on their row will swap with him? Best avenue to make that happen? Would it be to do it at check-in and mention to them?

TIA. Sorry for thread hijack.

Depends on the person. If it's an aisle seat and he isn't trading me an aisle seat the answer would be no. I also always at least get premium economy for the extended legroom so trading out of that would be a no as well.

First step would be to check-in online as soon as he can. A lot of times seats open up at check-in that aren't available when the reservation is made. Then talk with someone at the check-in counter at the airport if he can't do it online. They can often help if he gets to the airport a little early.

Also he probably needs to get the same seat as close as possible to the row he wants. Don't expect someone to grab all their stuff and walk 15 rows to the back of the plane to sit in a middle seat.
