I want to take a long weekend trip to Cancun, but my husband is against it because of crime.

Since it's a quick, cheap, non stop flight from New Orleans, it seems like a no brainer to me.

Is the crime really that dangerous for tourists?

Fly to Cancun.

Get on the ferry to Isla Mujeres. It's a 15 minute ferry ride.

Stay on Isla for the duration. It's cheap, it's safe and Playa Norte is a gorgeous beach.

You can stay where we did.

Hotel Secreto

Our view.

Your husband should approve.

It's probably safer than New Orleans.

Anyone that says that area isn't safe doesn't know what they are talking about.

Also the area south of Cancun like playa del carmen/tulum/etc is better

Just returned from Hyatt Ziva Cancun a few weeks ago. It was awesome! Left resort a couple of times.

No issues at all. I feel more uneasy walking around downtown Nola than any place we went to in Cancun.

I see they have things for kids there. Would you recommend bringing them or leaving them with the in laws? Ages 7 and 4

Is it too late to try to plan a trip for this July?

I know nothing. Haven't traveled since before my oldest was born because I don't like traveling pregnant or with an infant or young toddler.

Mexico isn't that safe. Tourist areas typically are. If they can't protect their tourist industry they have no income.

like others have said, the tourists areas as very safe.

Go to Playa. Its the nicer of the two and more secluded and less of a "spring break" millennial crowd(unless you are).

We stayed at the Paradisus le Perla in Playa. Its 5 minutes from downtown 5th street and some of the best food ive ever eaten.

The hotel district in Cancun is separated from the city. It is completely safe. You can also take a shuttle from the airport to the Tulum area or the Playa Del Carmen area. Both are reasonably close. Most places around there are all inclusive, so you show up and don't leave until you are ready to go home. Unless you want to do a day trip somewhere. This is Mexico's largest area for tourism. Completely fine.

Do you already have passports for you, your husband, and your children? They are about $100 a person, unless you have to expedite them...then expect to spend up to $200 a person.

If you are flying into Mexico...you HAVE to have passports for everyone, even children.

It's adamantly btw....not adomently

If you can swing it, I say bring them. I think it's never too early to start letting your kids experience as much as possible.

We went to Mexico twice last year(Tulum and Cancun) and never felt unsafe. As a matter of fact, I rented a car each time and did some sight seeing and exploring. Both times we rode to Akumal Beach and swam with the sea turtles, which is a free and public beach.

Beach-wise the best I've seen is the tourist zone of Cancun. When I've gone south the water is less blue/green and more subject to grasses.

Fly to cancun then go to Isla Mujeres or Tulum, Tulum is very nice, safe, has the cenotes, and the mayan ruins right on the beach.

Americans are scared of their own shadows these days. It's pathetic. Get out and see the world. It will change you and for the better. Even Cancun. Baby steps. There really is so much more.
