NOLA-HOU-SJD (Small layover in HOU).

For starters: I have heard that we have an hour ride to Cabo itself from the airport. We've got that lined up but any ideas on how much we should expect to pay (for a group of 6 with luggage)?

Once we're there: Ideas on where to eat, what to do, etc? Late 30's crowd that wants to have fun but we're also going down there to fish.

Any advice is appreciated.

We use transcabo, a quick look shows current round trip is $150 total, plus tip. That would be a private van for just your group up to 10. if you arent trying to be cheap, set up a service before you get there and dont merge with other travelers to share a van.

A few threads on this already

ETA, also after you pick up your luggage, you will go through a set of automatic doors, if you arent trying to see timeshare demos, run through this room quickly and dont believe or talk to anyone that is trying to help you leave the airport

We fished with Red Rum and they were great....went on a bachelor party and took 2 boats out.

Dining:

The Office-super fun and casual restaurant on the beach that is great for lunch or dinner.

Edith's-AMAZING and super festive. Nicer but not too expensive. The waiters bring a platter that displays their fresh fish and meats of the day. Picture steak and lobster, tuna steak and shrimp etc. but mexican style! Make a reservation for their "nicer" night out.

Giggling Marlin-fun/cliche bar but can also eat there.

Trailer Park-we went for a group dinner on our senior trip and it was great

*There are also lots of good restaurants at the Marina downtown but blanking on names

-They should look into a booze cruise one day. The marina offers lots of really affordable day trips for groups!

-During the day, they need to hang out at the Mango Deck on the beach. It's a bar that serves on the beach and has lounge chairs etc. but also MTV spring break style games/contest etc. It's hysterical

Nightlife:

Squid Roe: trashy/cliche spring breakers bar but so fun and funny people watching

Giggle Marlin: good pre-game bar. Can sit at a table and eat/drink heavily

Cabo Wabo: classic cabo bar, usually has live bands and different rooms (similar to Florabama I would say)

Pink Kitty: Legit Night club; my brother and john bought bottles here and it was so sloppy and fun.

old info but sharing because should never change

Not even close to an hour. Maybe 30 min. Check out my Cabo review in the sticky.

When will you be in Cabo? My son and I will be there from October 13-22. We opted for bottom fishing because the Bisbee's tournament is while we are there.

We fly in on 10/7 and stay through 10/12. We have two all-day charters booked with redrum. We booked this timeframe because we're about 2 weeks in advance of Bisbee's, which is allegedly the biggest saltwater fishing tournament in the World. Checking the fishing charts the best time of the entire year will be that window when we're there through the end of Bisbee's.

I'm genuinely curious about costs in restaurants. We're debating staying in-we have a villa type thing rented-and cooking for a night or two if its too exorbitant. I'd prefer to eat out and sample everything they have if I can find enough options in our budget.

some are pricey some are cheap. There are a lot of restaurants.

Cheaper stuff is still great in my opinion. You can bring your catch to most places as well. I guess it really depends on your proximity to downtown.

Had heard we could do this. Was wondering how much of it was a situation where they take what we brought, resell it for top notch and then hook us up with the sh!t that's about to turn. LOL.

Thanks for all of the info everyone.

Hacienda Cocina y Cantina is an awesome spot that you can't afford to miss. Edith's and Mi Casa are also cool places that offer up a nice menu and tableside "Mexican Coffee" which is made with flaming tequila. One of our favorite spots is Los Barriles - pics of their special plate below.

Hacienda Cocina y Cantina

Edith's

Tacos Guss – quite possibly the best tacos anywhere. Super cheap, super fresh and they being you a huge caddy of toppings. Don’t miss this place! Cash only.

Tres Gallos has an awesome patio and kick arse food...and STRONG drinks.

Javier's for a nice, elegant dinner and excellent service.

Sunset de Mona Lisa is a short drive out of town, but the food is average as best. The view is the best in Cabo however so it may be worth checking out if you can tolerate a moderate meal for not cheap.

El Farallon is our favorite spot in Cabo...food is awesome and $$$$ but worth every peso!

Maro's Shrimp House

Los Barriles has tablside dishes from Ceasar salad, to lobster to Mexican coffee

Hacienda Cocina y Cantina

If you are willing to put up with the vendors, then hit up The Office for breakfast and other meals....awesome stuff. The Mango Deck is next door and plays host to daytime shenanigans with an MC hosting various contests that aren't as cheesy as the shite you'd see in Cancun spring break.

The Office has their own glass bottom boat to take you over to see the arch up close and to Pelican Rock (and all the fish below you), it is only $5 per person if you eat there and show your receipt to the boat captain.

Mango Deck

Lorenzillo's overlooks the marina and has good lobster dishes although it is admittedly overpriced.

Nik San actually has some damn good sushi

Alexander Restaurant has some delicious authentic Mexican food (not tex-mex) that we always hit up. It is located on the Marina as well and is a great spot to people watch.

The Cabo Rey Sunset Cruise is touristy, but the food + show is awesome. Strongly recommend you do this if it's your first time here. You will NOT be disappointed.

Any fish you catch, most restaurants will prepare the fish for $10 p/p anyway you like. Here is some tuna we caught that they prepared as sashimi...it was fricking killer.

Last but not least, the sunrises and sunsets are some of the best you will see on the planet. Here is a photo we took that is NOT shopped.

::::: TRANSPORTATION :::::

We called Tony Baja tours for our airport/resort transfers. We paid $150 total and we were picked up in a private and hew Tahoe, they even stopped by Wal-Mart for 45 minutes for us. When you arrive at the airport, WALK STRAIGHT OUTSIDE or else you will be hounded by timeshare sharks.

...and the best part about Wal-Mart is that we had Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez help with our groceries. My kids went nuts when he came up and we have some awesome pics with him, the kid looked just like him. Here is one without my kiddos.

::::::: EATS :::::::

We didn't venture out as much as we usually do since it was just us the kiddos this time, we baked in the sun all day we were all usually asleep by 9:00pm.

The Office - solid place for breakfast that we hit up a few times. They have a water taxi to the Arc and Lovers Beach for $5 if you show your food receipt to the boat captain. TIP - don't sit in the tables near the beach unless you want to get haggled by vendors for fake Oakleys, silver jewelry, and straw sombreros.

Lover's Beach

Seal Rock by the arches

The famous arch (AKA "Los Cabos") - can you see the Dragon drinking from the sea? I thought that was pretty cool.

La Esquina - modern Mexican food that's part of the Hacienda Hotel (I think). Food was awesome and the service was great. We ordered the seafood soup, lobster tails, and the filet.

La Palapa - regular spot that had average food...so average that I forgot to take pics.

Tacos 101 - pretty tasty and fast. We had 10 tacos for $12 and all the fixings we wanted. Would go back to this place despite Tacos Guss being our favorite....which is just a stone's throw from this place.

Other pics of bars during the day vs at night. We went out 1 night and just couldn't hang...so sad.

::::::: SLEEP :::::::

We always stay at Grand Solmar Land's End, it is the southernmost resort in Cabo and you can walk over to Lover's Beach when the tide is low. It is a VERY chill place and has now completed their last additions to the resort which they began over 5 years ago (from the ground up).

Checkin lobby

This area used to be their "VIP" check-in but they have since converted it to their sushi bar. The food was pretty good although the menu is not super extensive so don't expect the same quality of sushi as Matsuhisa in Aspen, CO. Their ceviche is fricking outstanding and is about as fresh as it comes...daily out of Pacific.

Here are some pics or our room, it was a 3 bedroom 3 bath just across from the sushi bar area. Perfect location overlooking the 2 main pools.

Other than our patio, this was our favorite perch for morning coffee. The wind was always blowing gently through here.

Pics of Pools and Main Ground of the resort...

They have a breakfast shop that offers everything from STONG arse coffee to Lox salmon bagels and big donuts.

Onsite grocery store has everything you could need and then some. And it's really not that much more than buying things in town.

Onsite Sports Bar which stayed busy from 7pm on....this was right before they closed.

Open grill for their menu or if you bring fish from your charter they will cook it for you.

Most of these tables have gas-fed fire in crushed glass and at night are 100% full of people and live music.

Through these windows is the gym, right below the "fire pit tables".

They have these "flash mob" style entertainment that disappear just as quickly as they arrive. Great entertainment that doesn't loiter after they are done asking for tips.

The resort faces the pacific, and they strongly discourage swimming in the water as you can see here. In fact, you may have read about a couple last year that was swept into the water while walking on the beach and the wife drowned...ya, that was right here.

If you are up to climbing, there is a large hill (what I call a mountain) directly behind the resort that offers a steep and direct ascent. My 11 year old son and I did it the last day....took about an hour to get up and 90 minutes to get down. Here are some pics:

Here are some different things the hotel haps, maps, etc. Their kids club is awesome, we used it last year when our younger son was 7 and he loved it, asked to go back the next day.

The 2 highlights from my trip were fishing with redrum and eating at Gordo Leles.
Everything else was great as well although I didn't enjoy the constant vendors in the marina and mango deck but the ladies wanted to swim as we were staying at terrasol and couldn't get in the ocean.
Loved cabo and will be back. However we are going to isla in February to try it out.
