I made a quick solo four day trip to the Four Seasons Hualalai resort on the Big Island for a conference earlier this year. The property was amazing and i am planning to bring my family back next year for a longer visit. This was my first visit to Hawaii.

As I start the process, i am a bit concerned that i am closing my mind to other options. So i would like to pose 2 questions to the Hawaii experts on the Travel Board:

Does anyone have any strong feelings about one island over another (i.e. Maui, Oahu or Lanai over the Big Island)? I understand the Big Island is less commercialized than some of the other islands, which i appreciated.

Also, any feeling about Hualalai over other resorts on the Big Island. I did visit the Mauna Kea and thought the beach itself was superior to the Hualalai?

Any insight is appreciated.

I'm a Maui girl. My first trip was the Big Island, and I'm glad, because it's otherworldly. But now I stick to Maui because it's chill but not boring.

I know Kauai is supposed to be beautiful but my husband says I would be bored out of my mind there.

For me, the only reason to visit Oahu is to see Pearl Harbor. If that interest you, you could take an early flight to Oahu. Take a half day bus tour and return to your island of choice.

Maui is a terribly overcrowded tourist trap these days.

I'd suggest the Big Island or Kauai over Maui.

Depending how long you will be there, you could spend time on both islands.

On the Big Island, you need to consider the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Your kids will love it. Take a look online.

Kauai is much more lush than the Kona area of the Big Island where you were.

On Kauai there are two highly rated resorts. The Grand Hyatt is the more kid friendly of the two.

If you just have to go to Maui, the Four Seasons, Grand Wailea and Andaz are all right together. The Grand Wailea is the most kid friendly.

You and your family will go stir crazy on Lanai. There is nothing there but two Four Seasons hotels. Lanai is a good place to go unwind and vegetate.

Stayed here about 10 years ago. It's easily the biggest/coolest resort I've ever been to. Not necessarily the most luxurious or nicest, but I'd recommend 100%.

I've been to the Big Island, Kauai, and Lanai.

All different in their own way but I liked Lanai the best. Only two resort properties on the island are Four Seasons (one on the beach and the other in the Mountains).

Beautiful and laid back with great golf courses if that is your jam.

You can't go wrong on any island.
It just depends on what you want to experience.

Oahu is the main city and Honolulu has a lot of traffic but still a lot of things to do and see.

Maui is more relaxing and I've also heard good things about Kona.

We did 5 days in Maui and 5 days in Waikiki for our honeymoon. Will not be going back to Oahu - way too crowded. Maui was laid back. Definitely recommend biking down Mt. Haleakala

I find that they all have their own charm. (Even Oahu for the North Shore)

To me picking an island there is a very personal choice depending on what you are looking for. My favorites are Kauai and Maui.
