All,

I would like to take my wife to belize in March/April

Im looking for 4-5 Star Resort with luxury accomodations

Any help is appreciated. We like to spend time in the water, not the jungle

Curious, why are you choosing Belize? I love Belize and have spent plenty of time there, but if you are looking to just chill on a white sand beach and go for dips in the Ocean, etc. I would go somewhere else.

The biggest draw for Belize when compared to other tropical destinations is the jungle aspect to go along with the beaches. If that's not what you want to do, I would recommend somewhere else.

Stay on one of the islands. I'd recommend Ambergris Caye. Like the previous poster I've been to Belize a few times and there is no way in hell I'd stay on the mainland. It truly is a third world country.

ETA: Go to Costa Rica instead if you want to stay on the mainland.

Ramon's on San Pedro/Ambergris Caye is my rec, some of the best scuba guides on the island.

Going to disagree with all the posters who've never made it to the mainland. Big Mistake.

San Ignacio in the mainland is both safe and tourist friendly. I highly recommend spending a couple days in the mainland and doing the ATM cave tour is an absolute must. San Ignacio Resort is a great place to stay.

Avoid Belize City like the plague, it's a warzone

If you want to just hang out and relax in the water, then Belize may not be the place for you. Look I love the place and my wife and I are planning on retiring in Ambergris Caye, but it's not somewhere the just hang out on the water. There aren't a lot of nice beaches because of the reef that sits just off the coast. There are several nice resorts to stay at. Coco beach resort and Grand Caribe are nice places north of town. Coco has a pretty cool pool and Grand Caribe has a nice bar/club on the property.

Of course San Ignacio is awesome. You also have to drive all the way (about two hours) across the country to get to it. There are also wonderful Mayan ruins (Xunatunich) nearby. Most of the drive shows you how poverty stricken the country is but there are some gems. Cave tubing and the Belize zoo come to mind.

I agree the drive is awesome.

Every place has its shite hole and in Belize it's Belize city. I've talked to several people who went on a cruise and say they would never visit again. Well that's great. It keeps the price of things low because it's not a highly visited country.

People who visit a country on a cruise shouldn't get an opinion. They spend a few hours there and leave.

When in March? We'll be on Isla from February 22- March 3. Love to get together for a beer. I agree btw. It's my favorite inexpensive getaway island by far.

We have been to Placencia, and really like it. The best was when we stayed at Turneffe Island Resort. Check it out. All dive sites are very close. Fishing is very good. The accommodations are nice. The food is very good.

I second Turneffe Island Resort. If you are a diver, this place is really the gold standard in Belize.

This. The mainland is really awesome. San Ignacio Resort offers packages that include birding, trips to Mayan Sites including Tikal in Guatemala, ATM Cave, Ziplining and cave tubing, botanical gardens. There is a small casino right next door. We walked in and won $1200. The town has a farmer's market, eateries, etc.

San Ignacio Resort offers a beach/jungle split package where you do half and half. Check it out.

Victoria House, just south of San Pedro

We stayed near there and in addition to nicest accommodations they also had the nicest restaurant.
