Some friends and I are going to Austin next weekend. Staying in an Air B'n'B near downtown. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to eat, drink, and things to do during the day? I know we are going to Barton Springs but that's it as of now.

TIA.

There are a ton of threads with really good information in them. Your best bet is to search.

DONT wait in a 2 hour line for BBQ. Franklins I believe is the name. Unless you want to bring a little ice chest (don't know if it's allowed) and chairs while you wait, and your buddies are wired that way? I can't imagine there is BBQ that's worth 2 hours of my life in Austin. There are a ton of good BBQ joints. Can't imagine theirs is "2 hour wait worse" than franklins.

6th street is dirty. NOLA dirty with more hippies.

2nd street is great. Rainey Street is awesome. Can't go wrong on Rainey. If you find a place you DONT like on Rainey, kill your beer and literally walk next door and try again.

Enjoy.

Just went a couple weeks ago, here's what I got.
This article is super helpful for outdoors
LINK
We skipped Barton Springs and started at the trails end trail head. Four great spots to hang and get in the water within 3 miles of hiking from there. The most expansive was twin falls, highly recommend. Give yourself 4-6 hours out there, but you get easily spend the day.

Food
Veracruz all natural food truck is a must. If we had gone before our last day we would have gone everyday. Al pastor taco and the chorizo taco were incredible.

Micklethwait Craft meats is top notch BBQ without the super long wait like at most other places. It's BYOB, there's a convenience store within walking distance that has local craft beer plus all the regular stuff. We had Real Ale brewing's Firemans 4 blonde ale, perfect for a hot summer day. Another good local beer is The one they call ZOE, orange and black can.

We really wanted La Barbecue but weren't able to carve out the time to wait in the line, although I hear it's worth it.

Things to do
We went to a show downtown at a new venue called Three Ten Live it's owned and run by ACL live. Really great spot if there somebody's playing that you want to check out.

We went to a comedy show at Cap City Comedy club, its considered one of the better comedy clubs in the country. Had a great time. You should check who's playing while you're there. It about 15/20min from downtown.

We didn't get to half the things we wanted to do, but looking forward to going back.

I've been pushing this place for a while. The one at Radio Cafe (Manchaca @ Ben White) is my fav as you can get your food and get a beer or whatever else from Radio Cafe and sit at their tables inside or out.

If you want BBQ and don't want to wait on Franklins try Iron Works BBQ. It's my Aunt's place and is constantly rated the 2nd best place in Austin. Iv'e actually never been to Franklins because I always end up going there.

Happy to see you supporting your Aunt, but Iron Works is not good. At all. It uses an electric smoker, and you can tell.

Day drink in and around East 6th. My favorite spot there is Whisler's. Awesome bar.

The annoying thing about East Austin is the bars are spread all over, which I suppose is also a good thing if you live near them, but always feel each little area could do with maybe one/two more spots in close proximity.

There is a cool games bar and mini strip at East 12th and Chicon. I don't see the connection with Moloko and it being Clockwork Orange themed, dude needs to really step that up for it to be meaningful. Disappointing.

On Manor you have Patrizis in a nice courtyard with Butterfly Bar. Nice enough ambiance with the red lighting.

E. Cesar Chavez has Stay Gold, Weather Up or whatever else down there.

And then of course E 6th. I like White Horse as well. Liberty for their backyard area/food truck you'd never know was there from the front.

Only been here a year so I'm still taking recommendations.
