At what point is driving too far?

I have a cruise booked for Thanksgiving week to Aruba. I live in SW Arkansas, cruise sails out of port Canaveral. It's a 16 hour drive from my house. My wife is trying to tell me, we can just leave after school on Friday and drive thru the night. That would get us to port Canaveral at about 9am. First 2 days are at sea so I would have time to chill. FYI I have 2 boys and by the time the trip told around we will have finalized our adoption of 2 more. So 4 boys, 12, 10, 8, 7, wife and myself.
I personally think it's a flight only option. The trip back is what would suck most to me.
What say you travel warriors?

That's a long drive for sure, but some people enjoy the road trips too. I would fly though (personal preference is anything over 5-6hrs). Not sure how far you are from DFW but I live in the Tulsa area and a lot of people here drive the 3 hrs to use that airport instead of TUL.

I've set my limit at 7 hours. Anything more and I'm just flat worn out after I get where I'm going

For cruises its best to fly in the day before as you never know if there would be delays or cancellations flying in day of that would get you there after the ship leaves port. The ship won't wait for you. Are you able to fly in the day before? Can you afford 6 airline tickets and probably two hotel rooms if you fly down? If it was me in your shoes, I'm driving. I'm guessing $300 a person for round trip flights plus probably another $300 in luggage fees for everyone combined. If you drive and stoped a night going and coming back you probably save about $1400-$1500 driving vs expense of flying. If that amount is small in your world than fly but if it is a sizable amount than drive.

7 hours. Do you want to spend the first day of your cruise exhausted? Do you want to get back home exhausted? Driving sounds like a terrible idea.

12 hours driving is my limit. I refuse to spend over half the day behind the wheel but that's me.
If you do decide to fly then try to get a flight the day prior to sailing just in case of travel delays.

I can't imagine driving any longer than the time it takes from Baton Rouge to Destin.
Anything longer and I'm flying and leaving the poors behind.

My distance used to be MS coast to ATL. Now it's whatever NO to Houston is. Anything over that I'm flying.

I'm gonna try and find flights but i just don't how much luck i'll have trying to find 6. I'm 4 hours from DFW & MEM, 2 hours from LIT & SHV, and of course my first choice would be TXK.

8 hours is usually the cap for me. If I can' t get there in 8, I fly.

We haven't even made the drive from Nola to Little Rock in nearly 5 years. Our longest drive these days is Perdido once a year. My husband hates being on the interstate.

The contrast between sound advice and the use of then/than here is great

If it is just me, my driving limit is 4 to 5 hours (300 miles). If it is the whole family, it is 10-11 hours (600-700 miles).
The airport experience can be a pain with kids. When you drive you get more flexibility with when you leave, eat, get bathroom breaks, etc. At 600-700 miles, you only save a few hours home to actual destination by flying.
This is based on where I live in relation to the nearest airports (30 min or 1 hour). If I lived farther away from an airport, I would incease the distance I would be willing to drive.

If its under 10 hours I much prefer driving, over that it all depends on price, how much time I have, etc. It also depends on if there is a direct flight option.
If you have to rent a car, the door to door break even time with flying is around 5 hours give or take how far the airport is from each of your destinations. I laugh when I hear people say "I'd rather fly 1 hour than drive 5 hours", yeah but that doesn't include the 30 mins to the airport, 2 hour arrival early to the airport, waiting on bags, picking up rental car, and then driving from rental car to destination.
Waze and google maps on phones has really helped with my view on driving too, being able to see bad Interstate traffic jams ahead of times makes me much prefer driving.

Depends on where I am going. I hate flying and I like road trips. I like planning things to do during road trips and make them part of the vacation.

Is your wife going to help drive or does she expect you to go to work on Friday and stay up the entire night and then waste an entire day of the cruise sleeping and feeling like total shite? If yall are going to split up the driving then it might be doable. I would drive to save the money for a family of 6 but I wouldn't do it in one night. No way.

My personal limit is 11 hours... however, I still look for flight options on anything over 5. If the math works out and it is less expensive to fly or makes more sense time wise, I will go the flight route.
If not pressed for time the day after the trip, I typically drive. I enjoy stopping along the way at small restaurants, distillery tours, etc...

It depends on the situation. When you consider the cost of flying the family to a destination that is drivable then the tolerable distance increases. If the route you take means you can hit a few sites along the way it also increases the tolerable distance. I'm not going to fly to anywhere within 5-6 hours of drive time, it just does not make any sense time and money wise. I do like road trips though, so take that into account. One trip I'm never taking again is driving across west Texas to New Mexico.

I never get bored of driving.
When I graduated college in 2013, I drove from Athens to Niagara, to Lake Placid, over to Burlington, White Mountains camping, and ultimately to Acadia in Maine for a few nights camping. Then, proceeded down Hwy 1 on the coast back to the South.
I have driven to Key West/Everglades multiple times when I still lived in Georgia.
During the summer of 2015, I drove from Athens to Las Vegas and up to Yellowstone for a job.
And most recently I drove from Savannah to Michigan, and through the U.P. and west to where I live now, Whitefish MT.
And I'm still in my twenties
Long story short, I love driving.
