Three full days in mid-January. Would ya'll spend one of the three going the Dry Tortugas? Also do I need a wetsuit to snorkel in mid-Jan? Thin neoprene shirt sufficient?

Was planning to fly direct MSY-FLL on Spirit for $78 until I looked up the drive time to Key West and until I read some reviews of Spirit airlines. Will probably fork out the $400 to fly to Key West on a regular airline instead.

Good choice, cars are (or used to be expensive) to rent in South Florida and that drive takes 4 hours...

Weather in Jan is all over the place. Can be 55 or 85. I wouldn't do the dry tortugas that time of year. When we do go we just sit in the water and booze all day.
KW is mostly just bars and restaurants, not much sight seeing or beaches.

Wouldn't recommend the Dry Tortugas if you're only there for 3 days. Head to Fort Zach Taylor. It's a state park, you can explore the fort and it has the closet thing to a beach in the lower Keys outside of Bahia Honda. Bring some water shoes, the crushed coral is a bitch to walk in and out of barefoot.

We did Tortugas via float plane and it was worth it. Views from the plane were awesome coming and going. They include snorkel gear when you arrive. if there for 3 days I would do it via plane. The Boat turns this into an all day ordeal and the ride is boring. From the air the scenery is awesome... lots of wildlife visible from plane. Sea turtles, different kinds of sharks, etc... Sea plane is a cool trip to Tortugas.

I agree that the plane is better than the boat mostly because the boat is an extra 3 hrs round trip and makes it an all day sort of thing. I also find that when I go that's the only thing I do that day (again mostly because of sun drinking). There's no shade there.

Again my biggest concern would be the weather. For instance it's high 60's today and I wore a jacket all weekend.
