Decided on taking an Alaskan cruise next summer for my honeymoon. Any folks been? If so, any information would be appreciated. Looking to gather info regarding Preferred Cruise lines, excursions, land tour pre/post cruise to see the interior of the state, etc.
Thanks

My only two pieces of advice for you are:

Oceania Cruises
Get a balcony cabin

We have been twice, both times on Holland America. We enjoyed it. The scenery is beautiful. We embarked in Vancouver and sailed north. This way the scenery gets more spectacular as the trip progresses. The cruise is 7 days. One time we took the train tour to the Denali Park after the cruise. We went white water rafting at 10:30 at night and it was still broad daylight. Another time we spent a few days in Vancouver and Victoria before the cruise. Some of our favorite excursions were the whale watching boat rides and the long White Pass Railroad train ride through the Yukon Territory. You will have a great time.

Was the train ride (land tour) to Denali worth it?

It was many years ago when I went, but I rode the train from Talketna down south and it was a good ride. I would think taking it to or from Denali would be amazing.
I was pretty blow away with my little flight I took from Talketna up to Denali to land at the hiking base camp area.

What do you recommend for flights?

MSY to Vancouver
Anchorage back to MSY

I did this and loved it, although there is a different tour that goes by van and it goes much deeper into the territory and is like 3x longer.

100% agree to get a balcony. I took Norwegian and enjoyed it, I paid an extra $100 per person to upgrade to the fine dining option for every meal.

Great thing about Alaska cruises is u dont get the typical trash that goes on the Caribbean and Mexican cruises.

Yes, I think so. We enjoyed it. The cruise lines have their own comfortable rail cars that hook up to the Alaskan RR train. The scenery is beautiful. We stayed in a log cabin right outside the entrance to the National Park. If you don't want to do the land tour, Victoria and Vancouver are two great places to visit. You can get from one to the other by ferry.

Re: VetterGuy's question about flights - Yes, that is pretty much it. If the cruise ends in Seward they bus you to Anchorage to fly home. The time we took the land tour we flew home from Fairbanks but our 1st stop was in Anchorage then Seattle then Denver to MSY.

Just went in June. We went on Celebrity (Solstice out of Seattle) and had an incredible time. Amazing line to sail with. Make sure you get a balcony, it is a MUST for an Alaskan cruise. We did a whale watching excursion, a train ride in Skagway and another excursion where we got off of the boat at the glacier and onto a Catamaran. Spent a good amount of time at the glacier then got to explore and see a good bit of wildlife on the way back to meet the ship in Juneau.

Helicopter tour to land on a glacier is pretty cool. When we did it, we watched bears and dall sheep run up the mountains as we were passing.

There is nothing like seeing humpbacks from your dining room table.

Enjoy the trip and remember to post pics when you get back

Nice Tracy Arm pics. That place is heaven.

Most trips that connect to the interior via Whittier of Seward don't do Tracy Arm or Glacier Bay. They do the Hubbard Glacier on the outer coast in near Yakutat.

We actually ended up at Endicott Arm and the Dawes glacier. Tracy Arm has had record amounts of ice this year and even at the end of June we still could not get into it.

Another great excursion I have heard a ton about and will do next year is taking the plane ride to Taku Lodge.

As many trips down there as I have made, I have never done Endicott Arm.

My daughters used to spend weeks at a time at the lodge back in the late 90's. They were friends with the owners kids. The Taku River is an amazing place.

Just returned tonight from a 7 day cruise to the inside passage.

Cliff notes:
Crown Princess
Flew Alaskan Airlines (New Orleans to Seattle)
Balcony
Visited Seattle 2 days before and one day after cruise.
Ports:
Juneau
Skagway
Glacier Bay (no port, just cruising in the bay)
Ketchikan
Victoria

Did some excursions and just went out on our own at a couple ports. Will post more info if requested.

Went with 2 other couples. Had a great time and will go visit other parts of Alaska on future trips.

It was about 80 degrees when the Crown was in this past week.

Yes it was! We wore pants and brought jackets with us. One hour later we were wishing we had worn shorts and left the jackets on the ship.

The captain said it was the nicest day ever in Juneau for the Crown.

Still wish we had done the whale watching excursion. I let my husband choose and he chose Mt. Roberts tramway and Mendenhall glacier/Nugget falls.

I loved those but wanted to see the whales!

The whales are amazing. On our way to Victoria we were eating dinner and requested a table by the window. All of the sudden we see a whale breach (jump) the water. The whale did it 3 more times. One of the most amazing things I have ever seen and I wish I had been out on deck with my camera ready.

I'm bookmarking this, my next big vacation will either be an Alaskan Cruise or Costa Rica.

We might have been on the same boat. Or was it you that went a week or 2 after I went?
