I'm going to Austin in a few weeks and thinking of using Airbnb for the first time. It seems that all of the deals are for private rooms (I will be alone). In y'all's experience, air the owners usually there? Are there other renters there in other rooms? This all sounds fun and interesting on an European vacation, but I'm not so sure about somewhat local travel.

I think it pretty much depends on the individual unit. Search for the units that have the best ratings and read the reviews. Those will give you most of the information you should need. I won't do the private room unless it has it's own separate entry, which many of them do, and I've only done that a couple of times. In those instances it was pretty much like it's own unit, an in-law suite type of setup.

I would never rent a private room in someone's house. Sorry, no thanks. Whole house/apt rentals only.

Will never do a private room again. Recently did one and home owner was home. I was in the basement with my own entrance but still. I could hear the owner and friends making noise at midnight to three in the morning. I ended up checking out early

I could've misread, but it looks like he doesn't have one reserved yet. He's just asking for input on the experiences of others.

I did, then I got a request for more money. Airbnb is currently dealing with it

I only do the whole unit rentals as well. The first time I rented off of there, I did the private room thing. Ended up being pretty awkward staying with a stranger like that.

Stayed in one in Chicago

It really depends on how much time YOU spend there. Guy was gone from 8-8 and I usually left around 11, stayed out til after midnight. I literally only saw him the night I checked in and the next morning. Was there 5 days.

I don't think I would ever do the private room thing. Closest I've had is a "whole home" rental and the guy was staying in his MIL suite next door. Problem was he showed up in the house a few times to get things and kinda lingered. He seemed lonely.

I stayed in a private room while travelling in DC. The owner along with other guests were there. Each had a private room with a shared kitchen and living room. It was nice and the people were very friendly.

Like others have said, read all the reviews to avoid getting some creepy or sketchy owner.

I've done private rooms in Melbourne and Barcelona. I didn't have an issue as I was travelling alone, but I'd probably not do it as a couple.
