Planning on going to Europe for 3 weeks next summer. Already got the last week planned out in Italy but need advice for the first two weeks.

I'm thinking maybe fly into Rome then use the train system to go to Florence, Nice, Barcelona, then fly to Paris, then train to London, then Amsterdam. Lastly, fly back to Rome and do the rest of the week over there.

Anyone with any experience think this is a good way to kind of circle the continent? If so, any advice on things to do in those areas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also open to riding to different cities. Just trying to find the most efficient way to make my way around the area and spend a couple days in each town

Man that's a lot to do. I spent 6 days in Paris and that was barely enough.

That's a lot of geography to cover in just two weeks.

I'd consider something like London (3) > Paris (3) > Beaune (2) > Strasbourg (2) > Munich (3) and then maybe hit a small town in French or Swiss Alps on the way back to Italy.

Alternatively, add Dublin to the front end or Belgium somewhere around the Paris leg.

2 Week Trip

Well, technically you won't be lying when you say you've been there.

That's a lot of places in three weeks. I just got back from Florence, Monterosso, Nice, and Barça in 17 days and it was the trip of a lifetime. However, if we could do it over again, I think we would have shortened our stay in Nice for more days in Monterosso.

The train from Florence to Monterosso to Nice was fast, clean, and affordable. We flew from Nice to Barça on Veuling airlines. €100/person direct flight that was comparable to a southwest flight and saved us half a day.

Trying to circle all of Europe in three weeks would seem to be unrealistic. Everybody's different but I would prefer to sink my teeth in a fewer number of places rather than a window tour of the whole continent in that limited of a timeframe. If your goal is just to see as much as possible, then yea I guess that'll work. I don't know how much of each place you'll really get a feel for however. Pick a region of Europe, travel it, and get to know it. Pick another region for next time and tackle the continent in several trips.

Yall think traveling that far apart would waste a ton of time on the train?

Also, do you think adding a couple days and maybe taking away a city or 2 would be the best? Get about 3-4 days at each one?

Plan isn't to stay in Rome at all the first go through, just fly into there.

Yes that's going to be a ton of travel time between that many cities. Cut the trip to 4 cities and conquer Europe in pieces.

I think 3-4 days minimum for most of the cities you listed. I understand the desire to see as much as you can the first time, but it's difficult to really experience a place like Paris in two days. JMHO... You can always go back!

I'd pick two, maybe three, places for a two week trip.

So is it 2 weeks or 3? You have 2 in the title but 3 in the thread body.

If its 3, I think its doable but it will wear you out having to travel every 3 days or so. If you were going to attempt that itinerary, I would fly into London and out of Rome...its called "Open Jaw" and we do it all the time and it doesn't add much to the cost of the flight. Personally, I would cut out Barcelona and London and fly into Amsterdam and then work your way to Rome.....maybe even skip Amsterdam and Fly into Paris.....even though Amsterdam is my favorite city. As for train vs. plane, you can often find flights for about the same price as the train. So if the train takes more than 5 hours then look at flying. You can also do an overnight train and get a private sleeping compartment which saves you some travel time. But I rarely sleep well on the trains as they often stop several times in the middle of the night and people get on and off and you can hear people and noise from the platform. But if you are a sound sleeper it may work for you.

Agreed. Too many people make the mistake of seeing everything but experiencing nothing. That said, if he's a first timer and wants to experience a few key regions as a basis for deciding what to explore more of down the road, that's not a bad idea as long as he doesn't spread his time too thin.

It sounds like you're trying to check off boxes rather than experience the areas. Not criticizing you, but it'll be tough.

I would agree with this. I would not agree with just staying in Italy. Great country, but there's a lot more out there also.

Also, I wouldn't fly into Rome and circle back. You can get 2 one way tickets now very easily. I'd fly into London, Paris, or Amsterdam and work your way to your final destination.

If you want to do a lot, personally I'd skip London. Its a great city, but its the most "american" and the least different place of all those on the list.

I would also highly recommend some stints in smaller towns, like in the Alps. Only going to the big cities is like saying all of Louisiana is like New Orleans.

My suggestion:
Fly into Amsterdam - stay 3/4 nights
Train to Bruges - 2 nights
Train to Paris - 4 nights
Fly to Barcelona - 3 nights
Then figure out best travel option from Barcelona for your last week in Italy. You could also substitute Barcelona for another city that makes your travel easier to get to Italy that last week. As other people suggested, you don't want to try to do too much at one time. I thought Bruges was a good option because it's a small (but amazing) city that you can get around in a day that will expose you to the Belgium culture.

I will be in Europe for 3 weeks but the last week is already planned and the full time will be in Italy.

I'm going with a group that really wants to explore more than just one country and even though we may be staying in the bigger cities the plan is to possibly to a day trip to somewhere outside the city. These are all choices we will make after we pick a city.

What do yall think about 15-17 days and do something more like..

Fly to Amsterdam, train to Paris, Fly to Barcelona, Train to French Riviera (Nice), then Train to Florence and spend between 3-4 days at those 5 stops?

Dude we were in Italy for summer for a full 2 weeks. And we still couldn't go south of Rome because we didn't have enough time. So we didn't do Amalfi, Sicily or Lake Como (north). Italy is a biiiig country. And very beautiful. Consider spending 3-4 days in Cinque Terre. Monterosso is just one of the 5 towns there. Its magical. You'll love it. There there is Chianti Hills in Tuscany. Spend a night or two there (trust me, you will wish you did).

My suggestion: Do 2 weeks in Italy and a week in France. Paris, Nice and Monaco/St. Tropez maybe. 3 weeks and you will truly experience 2 beautiful countries. And you won't be rushed. Meet people. Regular day to day is so rushed so try and not do that when you are travelling to another country on vacation. Stop and smell the roses!

Do you really want to spend most of your time commuting from one city to another, just to say you've set foot there? Its not worth it. Just my opinion.

I did 16 days

Did 3 in Venice
Did 2 in Amsterdam (should have done 1 more)
Did 1 in Luxembourg
Then the other 10 we visited different cities in Belgium, they were not all tourist traps but all had a unique aspect about them and I'm glad we did.

I plan on trying to take a 10-15 day trip this summer and going back to Belgium, visiting cities and taking the train to Amsterdam and Rodenbach for a few days
