I have 6 hours on a Saturday morning between flights. Any recommendations on what to do for a few hours if I leave the airport?

It's doable to leave the airport and get back. I did it on a layover with maybe 1 or 2 hours more than you. Train is about 20 minutes. We just walked around and ate pastries and shite because it was 7AM.

Train from the airport goes right into the center of town. Like Teddy Ruxpin said - it takes about 20 mins on the train. Say another 10 mins to get to it. Also remember - if this is your port of entry into the Schenghen zone, you will have to go through immigration which can take some time. It took me about 40 mins when I was there couple months ago. They only have 6 booths total and in the morning only 3 were functioning.
So 30 mins for the commute each way, and you probably wanna be back at the airport at least 1 hr in advance. Probably also want to leave a 30 min margin just in case. This leaves you with 2.5-3.5h.

I would take the train to centraal and go see the Amsterdam sign. Try some Gluwein unless you are on your way to Germany/Austria anyway.

Try a coffee shop if you are into that for the experience. Museums/Anne Frank house takes a while so that is not an option. Maybe take a quick city tour on one of the canal tours, ride the tram and then head back.

Another option is to do the Heineken Experience tour. Remember: This is not the brewery, just a tour of the facility showing how the beet is brewed. It is a cool experience and if you move fast you'll be able to see the whole thing.

If you can make the times work, I'd just go to the Jordaan and walk around for a bit.

Otherwise stay at Schiphol, it's a great airport. Go to the mini Rijksmuseum.

Of course, an alternative to going into Amsterdam, and one you could probably get a better feel for in only a couple of hours, is to go the other direction into Haarlem and walk around the old town area. It's awesome and they have a ton of places you can just browse in a much more "traditional Dutch" setting.

Sounds like I'll really only have free time from 7:00-9:30 AM which limits the activities I can do. Kind of like the idea of just walking around a bit and hanging around at a coffee house or cafe for breakfast and coffee. Afraid I'd lose track of time if I hit up a coffeeshop!

I would definitely just walk around the city and down the canals. It's an incredible city to hit a coffee shop and then strolll along casually and people watch, any time of the day.

You can take the train beneath the terminal to downtown. I forget the stop but one stop is one block from the Anne Frank house where she and her family hid from the Nazis. It's a museum now.

Good responses by everyone. So I will just second a lot that has been said. Go walk around the center of town and go to the canal area which is basically The Jordann.....It's adjacent to the center town area. Depending on what time of year and what day the Albert Cyup Market may be open. It's a big Street market that is cool to check out. There is food at the market as well as all sorts of other stuff.

The market looks like a great recommendation. My layover is actually next Saturday so hopefully it's open in the winter.

If you're getting there early in the morning and it's January, immigration won't be a problem. I walked right into the country at 7AM in August, so I imagine January is even lighter.

If your time is 7-9:30am it will be dark mornings. Daylight is about 8:30 to4:30 and the temperature is typically 30-40's and raining this time time of year. So plan accordingly. Winters really suck there but the summers totally make up for it. Great, beautiful city and area... in June.

My flight got in around 630 am and I was stuck in line for a while. I guess I just got unlucky with a bunch of flights coming in with ours.

Not to mention, nothing even opens until 9 at the earliest, including restaurants. None of the neighborhood markets start until 9. Even places that claim they open at 9 won't open at 9. We got into city centre around 8 a.m. in March, and there wasn't a soul to be seen other than a city worker washing off a sidewalk.

Damn, that's a bummer. I'm sure I can grab coffee somewhere that early though. I've actually been to Amsterdam once before during winter, but I was really sick and didn't get to do much. Hence why I want to enjoy it at least for a few hours on my layover.

Sleep deprivation and jet lag is a bitch. Decided to stay put at Schiphol because I'm hardly a functioning human right now. Good thing this might be the best airport in the world for a layover and I have access to the KLM lounge to keep me out if the casino.

I have a 1:25 layover in Iceland, curious if I'm going to have to pass through customs to get to my next flight or not. Thinking of changing a flights to find a more direct flight.
