What's the best bang for my buck when it comes to gigabit wireless routers? I just got ATT fiber installed and get close to the full gigabit when hardwired, but my old netgear wifi is capping me around 300mbps. The ATT modem/wifi is in a far corner of my house, so using built in wifi on that isn't really cutting it. I have cat6 run from there to a central location where the old netgear sits.. That's where new wifi router will be going.

Will need to have 4 LAN ports on it as well. Other than that I don't really need any other features. Just want to get the most I can out of my gigabit feed.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've got the same problem. AT&T built in wifi sucks so I hooked up my Netgear nighthawk which should support gigabit, but speed dropped in 1/2. I have tried all the different settings and can't get more than say 600mbps. Everything is hardwired using Cat6 which is necessary for 1gb speed.

I just upgraded to the Linksys EA7500 about a month ago and really like it.

Asus 3100 or RT88U are some of the best I've seen.

I would even be ok with 600mbps if it was over a decent range. The signal from my old netgear drops pretty drastically over short distances

Think I might go with the AC1900 nighthawk

The Asus RT88U looks legit but a little too much $$$ for what I'm looking for

Yeah it seems pretty good, not quite as good review wise but should still be solid.

All depends on what features you want, the Netgear doesn't have MIMO, nor does it have an app to control it from your phone or Alexa (if you have) remotely for the same price.

Don't have Alexa

Box says it has app control and specs online show it having MIMO.

It is $20 off at Best Buy though

Edit - I misread, you are correct that it doesn't have MIMO

You're not going to get anywhere near 600 Mbps with a Nighthawk 1900. You may see 450ish on the 5G band.

The RT88u dished out over 600 Mbps, and the Dlink 890 did as well. Your device will need an ac867 card in it as well.

Those are your 2 best bets if you're trying to get those kind of speeds, but you won't get them over a long range...maybe in the same room.

Gotcha.

I went ahead and grabbed the AC1900 since it was on sale and I'm getting 550ish in the same room

As long as you're happy, that's all that matters!

I hear ya. I don't disagree the ASUS is the better router. I'm gonna give this one a few days and see how I like it. If not I'll exchange it.

I think I can live with 500 via wifi though. My main streaming is done on hardwired devices

You're fine, man! You got a good router. Unless you're uploading and downloading huge files, the internet becomes your bottleneck when you have fiber. It's nice! I love mine!

i hear this is normal. Are yall running your night hawk as an access point or are you using it as your router and the Fiber router as a passthrough?

Mine is currently set as a secondary router. I plan to make it just an access point when I get back tonight.

Is one better than the other speed wise?

idk thats why i was asking. But i have read that there is a dramatic speed reduction when attaching a different router or an AP. I wanted to see if you saw a difference.

Best answer so far. You can have the best router in the world but you wireless devices need AC network adapters if you want to see the best speeds. Anything over 300 Mbps wifi is doing pretty good.

Most people with N and low AC routers barely pass 125 Mbps depending on the home environment and channels used. Could be getting interference from other appliances as well.

I'm seeing in the area of 500mbps via wifi now.

I did find out the hard way that my Linux CPU only has a 100mbps Ethernet card though
