Maybe a dumb question but some wireless network adapters say they have a range of 1,500 Meters. My In-Laws live a half mile away, are older, and have dial-up. Is it possible they could pick up my signal with something like this?

No, you're gonna need a directional antenna to get a signal that far.

That looks like it's a little too high tech for me.

For reliable communication you need a radio on both sides, one acting as an AP (access point) and the other as an SU (subscriber unit). It's just two wifi devices, but they're both directional and talk to each other over the distance. It's a wireless bridge. It's not overly complicated. You go into the wireless settings, match the SSID and passwords, set one as AP and the other as Station. Mount them and point them at each other. One side plugs into your router/switch, the other into your parents router/switch/or laptop/desktop/whatever.
Trust me, we do this shite all the time. If you just try to put a big antenna on one side you're gonna have a bad time.

Like, Casty says, you need something broadcasting the signal as well. You might be able to pick up a wifi router signal with just an antenna, but a mosquito might fart somewhere between the two points and you'll never find the signal again.
