I'm looking for something that performs similar to the microsoft wireless adapter.
Are there any similar products I should be considering? Specifically, those that don't need wifi to work.

I have used some of the IOGear stuff before.
Looks like they have new products as the one I used isn't listed anymore. Hope this helps...

Got my brother in law one of these from bestbuy Actiontec screenbeam mini 2. He uses it all the time while on the road for construction jobs.
