I'm working on a project for work and was trying to find some information on the current status with any issues for XP. Leading up to XP support being ended, we saw a ton of warning about how malware for XP was going to be spreading like wild fire. I have been unable to find any articles or info on whether or not this has/is happening. Does anyone have any insight or info they might have read lately?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't heard of any incidents and it may not happen for a while. The thought is patches to current windows will give malware writers a map of where to attack XP. If you have active XP machines that access the internet make certain you have current anti-virus and anti-malware software actively running. I'd also switch the default browser from IE since they won't be updating it anymore. That won't 100% protect you, but it's as good as you can get if you have to run XP.

Not sure if it was related to XP, but I just upgraded my mom to Windows 7 because she was having a lot of malware issues.

I thought there was a security hole in IE that enabled an attacker to run code on your machine. I also thought that wasn't going to be patched on IE8 and earlier. So, there's that, unless something changed.

Why not just upgrade? A Windows upgrade is much less expensive that losing client data, getting sued and the plaintiff finding out you knowingly failed to upgrade.

I received an IE8 update after the support ended. I assumed it was for the security hole.

Too much trouble to pull the old box out of storage at this time.......

Not saying it applies here, but I have had to work with computers running 3.1 or 95 fairly recently due to having technical software the licences to which are extremely expensive.

They keep to the old systems because it gets the job done and they don't want to spend the thousand (s) of dollars an upgrade would entail.

I didn't realize Microsoft ever did anything to stop Malware or virus attacks. If they've been trying, I take back all the terrible things I've said about Apple and their stupid fricking cult.

No XP updates... naaaaah

Fire up regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\. Create a new Key called PosReady. Right click the new key and add a new DWORD with the value 1. That’s it. Now head along to the Windows Update website and you should see a bunch of updates.
