Windows 10--can't log in (solved)
Posted by parrotdr on 1/28/16 at 3:41 pm00
Searched and couldn't find on TD although this problem is all over the interwebz. Upgraded my home PC (thankfully not at office, yet...) to Windows 10 about two months ago. NO problems til last night.
The start button and search box were unresponsive. Found several folks with same issue and a possible solution--went to msconfig to "boot" and checked safe boot". On restart I got to the login screen which would not accept my previous PIN. Evidently its now trying to link up log-in to my windows live account, because my admin account name was now replaced with my email address. However, the password won't work--not my windows pw, not my previous pw for my pc or the PIN I used.
Went online, did all the simple fixes such as checking pw with onscreen keyboard, changing my password online on another pc, etc.
Some online say to go to the area of loginscreen where you can choose "another account" or local login (which I assume would be my freakin' PIN) but can't find this on mine.
So my relatively minor problem became a much bigger problem.
Anyone run into this crap? I'm ready to do some percussive maintenance on Bill Gates' arse!

Thanks, unfortunately, not working. I've seen this online where some folks get it to work after changing that password. Tried that, too--no dice.
Ironically, I never set it up to use that login--I used a pin. But it seemed to automatically link to it...guess it's Bill Gates next step in controlling the world

Well have you tried going into safe mode to reset the device? It should let you go through that initial setup again and you can use a local account instead of microsoft account. I dont use the PIN on my machines, so i use one of my microsoft accounts. Makes it easier for syning setup/layout and browser stuff, plus onedrive accessand onenote

This is a common problem with Windows 10. You should not have upgraded.

Middle of the page, it details how to change your password using your install disk and command terminal

Thanks butthead...there's always one. I upgraded at home as opposed to screwing up my office--I'd rather find out all the shite here than there!
As for the real advice, thanks and I'll try those things.

Thanks for all the actual advice--problem solved. Just using my online windows PW wasn't the issue--even changing it didn't help. I created a boot disc for Windows 10 from another PC, booted from that to the "repair" menu, and did a reset while keeping all my files. Then removed and disabled password requirement for login. Windows sucks but I'm still using--I guess that's the definition of addiction.
