Who has experience with the higher end 2-in-1 laptops? Are they worth it?

I jumped on the ultrabook bandwagon early when the craze began in 2011 and now my laptop is approaching 4 years old and starting to break down physically. The ultrabook market has evolved a lot in those 4 years especially with the introduction of the 2-in-1 laptops with a touch screen that can be flipped around like a tablet or stood up like a tent.
Are these worth it, or is it just a gimmick? You have laptops with just as much power and function, but without the touch screen and convertible ability, that are cheaper.

If you have use for that functionality, it's not a gimmick.

If you are going from an ultra book to a 2 in 1, I believe you will love the transition...
I'm going from a full keyboard laptop and 17" screen and the transition isn't easy for me. I like the all in one but I still use my 6yr old laptop for most of my work.

I went from a Macbook Pro to a surface pro. And the usability is great.i haven't actually used it as a laptop yet really though. Only downside is the RAM I went from 16 to 4...

That's why I view the 2-in-1 as a "third" (or fourth - if you count the smartphone) computer. I would still travel with a desktop replacement laptop and use the 2-in-1 as a revved up tablet - I've been using desktop replacements since they were invented. Having a full size keyboard, number pad and 17" screen aren't optional for me. But having the 2-in-1 will be better than nothing. I just can't justify the cost. I do not use a tablet - I'm not a tablet person, I suppose.

I've got an Asus Taichi. There were some issues with display drivers with 8.1 and 8.1 update. Other then that, this thing is great. Laptop and tablet in one.
