I have an older laptop from my gf i want to wipe and use as my internet portal on my sofa. It is riddled with viruses and slow as hell. It has vista so i dont want to keep that.

Should i buy a copy of Win7 or Win8? or should i try a Linux based OS? I dont have much experience with any of those except I used UbuntU like 8 years ago to retrieve data from a faulty HDD.

It will just be used to surf the web, access my NAS, and maybe some minor torrenting.

What should I do.

Well since Linux is free why not give it a shot before buying a license? Try out Mint or Ubuntu.

Just FYI, I got an older HP laptop from my in-laws that I was hoping to put Win8 on... but there were several devices that did not have drivers. Additionally, it was only wireless G. Anyway, I ended up putting Linux Mint on it and use it basically as a web browser.

If it can run Vista, it can run 7. I'd just put 7 on it.

Naah it's a snap. All the free basic programs you need.

ETA: Look at it this way. It's free and it runs great for basic usage and productivity.

If you don't like it you can just wipe and install 7. You haven't lost anything by trying it first.

Anyone who has ever used a computer should be able to pick it up easily. Here is a screenshot of Linux Mint:

Looks pretty familiar, right?

Some are, most aren't. But since you said you wanted to use it as an internet device, both Chrome and Firefox are available. What else do you need on this machine? Mint should come with the LibreOffice suite already installed (or if it's not, it is a snap to install stuff), as well as basic photo viewing/editing apps, music players, you know the basics. And there is a huge library of free software available to do pretty much anything you could ever want to do.
