Is restoring from a backup still the way to go when you get a new iphone? Or do you start from scratch? I guess I am asking if the phone performs better when you start from scratch. Years ago, I had read that restoring from a previous backup may introduce old data that messes with the phone. not sure if this is old wives tale or legit.

sometimes it is legit, but most the time it isn't. I always restore from backup. Haven't ever had a problem.

I usually do a "clean" backup where I only include contacts and most of my apps. I find it a good time to clean out apps I haven't used in forever. I don't need to backup music or anything else because of cloud/appleMusic. No issues doing things this way.

I've personally seen issues where a phone was restored and the software issue reemerged with using the iCloud backup since an iCloud backup is the OS and data less the applications. It's very rare that there are issues related to this, but it can happen.

I always start fresh. It helps me detach from crap that I don't need and always hold on to. I back up the old device, and start brand new with a new phone.

The only time I have restored from a backup was when I had to get my iphone 6 replaced due to a faulty screen. Most of the other times I just saved my contacts and backed up pics to the computer. Just start fresh when it comes to OS and apps.
