When did Google Docs become....good?!

Have I been living under a rock?
I tried google docs a few years ago and found it...lacking to say the least.
I just recently tried them out again and wow! Way more functionality. The spreadsheets have a ton more functions available and the mobile versions of docs and sheets are great on my iphone. I've pimped DocsToGo as my go-to mobile productivity app in the past but google has something that's better IMO.
And apparently, you can even make macros in a java-based scripting language. I'm going to really dig into that in my spare time. It looks like I'll probably be able to replace office for my personal use.
I know a lot of you are reading this and probably thinking I'm from the Deutschland, but just wanted to share

I'm behind on the progression of all the free office alternatives. I do recall most of them being pretty shitty years ago, but I could only assume they've made significant strides since then. I just can't use them for my purposes since document editing and production is half my job, and we use MS Word.

Man it's great! No idea how I missed this for the past 2 years!
I actually tried my best to like it a few years ago but it was so lame that I had no choice but to go back to MSFT.
I'm REALLY impressed with how good it is on mobile also. Nice job Google!
ETA: oh, and ILikeLSUToo, give it a try. You might find that it's not enough for work, especially if your employer restricts you to Office (like mine) but I'd bet you'll find it more than sufficient for personal use.

gets better every day.
yep, the overhauled android apps (from maybe a month ago) are FANTASTIC
all the export/download options are great too..PDF..DOCX...etc. just a really impressive job all around.
eta if you want to really geek out, try their 'fusion tables' and you can create your own datasource online to feed from/to

Anyone have an opinion on the usefulness of microsofts version with outlook.com? IIRC, theirs could create docx files and such.

I pretty much use it all the time, when I do technical document write ups. For other stuff, I'll also use Libre/Open office, but will do stuff on GD. I'll use word mostly for resumes, but I've made a few on google docs as well.
I love google docs, plus you can save it as PDF too.
eta: CAD mentioned some of the same stuff

Google Docs is awesome. I use it/them for just about everything.
It does pretty much 99% of what you want with spreadsheets/word processing and throwing in cloud storage/sharing and Google Drive functionality it's just too good to pass up.
Haven't purchased or used a copy of MS Office for years now for personal stuff and don't plan to.

why no Paste Special or Paste and Match Formatting?
Also, Undo function basically doesn't work. I guess because it saves in real time?
My only two complaints but they're sort of big ones for the stuff i do.

oh and i guess there's the small matter of Google being a wing of the CIA, NSA and/or FBI and anything sensitive or confidential stored on there may as well be emailed directly to Obama.

You don't think your Windows/OSX computer is private, do you?

At least it can be if I want it to be.

I just mean you can create and save docs on a system without being connected to the internet at all. Save to thumb drive to share as needed. I guess theoretically you would have to remove all comm hardware to be totally safe but we're entering deep conspiracy theory here as far as the average citizen is concerned. And I'm totally a conspiracy theorist at heart.

For personal use, I've been using open office and Libre for a few years now.
I can't remember which, but after an update, none of the documents would work or open.
Thus, work is always going to be MSFT products.

quote:Yep, and to follow all copies of your files to be sure none of them ever have a route to the internet. Oh, and also make sure the machine you created the file on never has internet access again, in case it hides a copy of "interesting" files somewhere on the drive.
