I'm building a house and making a list of smart devices I'm going to be putting in the house.
So far:
Smart thermostat
Google Wifi
Ring video doorbell
Camera's in our baby's rooms and playroom
Not sure what else.

3 LIFX Z Strips
1 LIFX BR30 Smart Bulb
2 TP-link Smart Bulbs
2 Echo Dots
1 Smart Plug
I think that's it. Haven't gotten to the security portion of smart tech yet.

The nice thing about smart devices is that, by and large, they don't need to be prewired. Despite the advancement of wireless technology, if I were in your position, I'd prewire the heck out of the house, including prewiring for security cameras. Put outlets and/or channels wherever you think you might put a tv and I'd prewire for speakers, too. You can even leave everything behind drywall and open it up if/when you decide to use it.

Oh trust me I am. It's going to be wired with Cat6a, RG6 quad shield and outlets higher up on the wall for mounted TV's. I will probably wire for exterior security cameras. I've already purchased a 16 port switch. I will be ordering the rest soon.

Philips Hue Lights
+ 4 White LEDs
+ 4 White Ambiance LEDs (newest model)
+ 3 Color Ambiance LEDs (2nd gen)
+ 1 Hue Bloom
+ Hue Bridge (2nd gen)
2 Belkin WeMo Insight Switches
2 iHome Smart Plugs (1 ISP5, 1 ISP6)
2 iHome 5-in-1 SmartSensors
2 GE Z Wave Plus Smart Plugs
4 GE Z Wave Plus Smart Motion Sensors
1 Wink Hub 2
I live in a rental home and I have primarily invested in portable devices. Once I get permanent housing, I'll upgrade the thermostat, doorbell and perhaps the appliances. I have not dipped into security cameras or vacuum cleaners, but I have those on my list if the price is right.
