Web site design and hosting question

I'm looking at starting a new business and need a web site. My biggest need beyond the normal "this is my company and these are the services we offer, contact us here", is the ability to have an FTP site on my page. Granted I could use a third party FTP site but; to me, having FTP capabilities on my page seems more professional. Is this something that can be done with a build it yourself type page or do I need more advanced help. (Web designer and all that jazz).
What hosting site and/or create your own website would the tech board recommend?
TIA

What do you need FTP for? If "professional" is what you're looking for, I don't think FTP is what you want.

I'm doing engineering and I want for a specific client to be able to pull down files that pertain to their project. Depending on the job, some projects exceed the typical size of email allowed by my clients provider. Also, I want this so that they need a password and not any Joe Blow can get their files. Hope this helps.

There is a lot of software available that can give you a professional password-protected file store with a nice web interface integrated with your site. But yeah, you will probably need help with such a solution.

All sounds possible via a CMS (content management system). A CMS will allow you to edit pages / add new files to download on your own without continuing to pay someone else to do it.
Pixelbrush this company does good work and pricing is online (I'm biased ;)
As far as hosting, (depending on how much traffic / how large your site is) prices start from $7 - $30 a month.

FTP doesn't seem necessary at all. This is a simple password-protection problem. There are a million ways to solve it.
That all said, I'm more concerned about you hosting client files on simple web hosting. How many clients are you looking to serve?

If you're asking these questions, you need to go hire someone to do this.

Basically, this is the answer to your problem.

Since you are talking client files, you would probably want to make sure they are kept secure, and you are not using some cheap hosting company that may or may not have adequate security controls in place. We use a Citrix product called ShareFile, which has a nice user ID and password interface that can be dropped in to any existing website.
In your specific case, you could probably create a drag and drop site (which may or may not look professional) and use SF as the file hosting tool. May not be a bad way to start if you are looking at doing this yourself.
