Is my best bet just getting a TCL Roku and taking the guess work out of it?

You're going to buy a whole TV just to watch ESPN?

You could always use your computer and plug it into the tv via HDMI.

Roku does make it easier. I started streaming a few years ago using IPhone 4s via HDMI. Crazy how much I have evolved from those days.

I use my Roku for pretty much everything but run KODI off my computer via HDMI. Looking around for something better than a Roku, but isnt a priority. Thinking ARNU Box

You can get it on Sony's android TV's. Not positive but I don't think you can get it on Samsungs.

Don't base your TV buying on the availability of watchESPN

Most people have a $180/month cable bill to "watch ESPN"

I was thinking of getting a small 32" while I'm working out of town as I'll be here through the rest of football season and beyond.

Figured I'd take it back home with me and use it in my bedroom as the only TV I have at the moment is in my living room.

I figure 160 or so on a TV will be cheaper than me going to a sports bar for every game...

Yeah, was gonna say just get a Chromecast. As cheap as they are, I'm amazed more people don't have them, but they also don't really advertise them.

Different question and point. I am talking about using the app or going web based. Neither will work on my two smart TVs. I have to use something else. I generally use a tablet.

still confused. your smartTV espn app doesn't work so you chose to watch it on a TABLET instead of buying a $30 stick so you can watch tv?

i figure i'm lucky if *ANY* smart TV apps work but certainly would never count on it.

I don't usually agree with you on much but WTF are these people talking about?

Why can't they plug in a Roku Stick, Fire TV, Apple TV, etc. into a normal TV?

Problem with a built in is you can never upgrade your steaming hardware. The good thing is it is the best smart TV functionality available. I have one of the 32" for each of the kids' rooms but I don't care if they can upgrade their hardware. I'd be tempted to get one for my bedroom if I needed one but wouldn't consider it for my main TV.

Eta:
If it's a spare TV I'd go for it, it's a great TV for the price and the only cord you need is the single power cord. Add on the fact that it's light and it is great for moving around.

I hear ya

This definitely isn't for a main TV

I've got the latest Amazon Fire TV for my main TV at home. Just trying to find some functional situation for me to watch the game on the road that doesn't involve me hanging out and blowing my money at Buffalo Wild Wings or something

I love my Roku device, but the WatchESPN app doesn't work worth a shite on it. Freezes and buffers. No other app does that on my Roku. Not sure how well it works on the TVs with Roku built in.

I flip over to AppleTV streaming device, and the WatchESPN app on it works just fine.

Also, I think you will need to have a cable or satellite account with a package that carries ESPN to be able to login and activate WatchESPN on a streaming device. If you don't have that, you can use one from a friend or relative if they will share the info.
