Best Buy and Wal-Mart are instead backing a retailer-owned mobile technology group called Merchant Customer Exchange, which also counts Target Corp. among its members.

Why?

MCX's payment service requires only a software download and can be used on existing iPhones and Android devices, whereas Apple's is only for the latest generation handset.

Why not just get on board with one standard that supports every OS...including the most widely used mobile OS in the world?

I'll keep using my credit card until one platform wins.

SSDD. This is the same power struggle that has kept NFC payments from becoming more common already. I think eventually these retailers will adopt NFC payments pretty quickly, but they probably have a lot of money tied up in this payment scheme that was just announced. With Apple joining the NFC payment crowd, some sort of "standard" has been adopted, so I figure this is a bit of a last gasp for MCX.

I don't know. I was just trying to fit in. I have no idea what any of that means.

What is Best Buy?

Are you talking about that Amazon display center?

Price match is your friend. Best buy has become good about this. Off course I use it as an amazon display center as well , depending on when I need the item.

I wonder what Gman's thoughts are since he claimed that we would be seeing Apple Pay being used everywhere in just a few short months... I believe his exact words were that it would be a "common sight".

He probably thinks that the wording of the OP (suggesting that they are opting out of Apple Pay specifically) means that he was right about how it works, as if retailers have to opt in/out of specific NFC payment services.

I'm out of the flame fest over this. But I'll bet you this much. They'll both reverse thier decision within a year.

ETA: of course that's assuming Best Buy is even still around in a year

It has taken you less than 2 days to backtrack on that statement. People wouldn't harp on your so bad if you would just have a normal discussion and admit you were wrong about something when you obviously are. I do it here all the time. It won't cause a heart attack, I promise. Your inability to do that only enhances the perception of your insecurity.

Ummm backtrack on what?

BestBuy & Walmart aren't coming on board? BFD. Bestbuy might not even be around in a year and how many iPhone users shop at Walmart anyway?

Anyway. I'm not backtracking on jack. All the major credit card companies are in a big big way. We'll see soon enough.
