Uverse audio only PCM

I recently switched to Uverse. I have the box connected to my Denon receiver via HDMI, but for some reason, the audio is only coming over as PCM. I made sure the setting on my Uverse is set to "Surround sound" rather than "Stereo", but it's still not working properly. Any ideas?

I don't have a denon (have a Pioneer VSX-50) and I can change my output types so that I can put it on Auto Surround and it automatically chooses dolby digital by default.
Does your receiver have something like this? Maybe it's a setting issue? All you can do in the settings for UVerse is make sure it's on Surround Sound rather than stereo (which you've done).

I changed the type on the receiver, so it uses all 7.1 channels, but it's only a stereo signal.

Might depend on the channel you are watching as well. Is this on every channel

Have you checked the hdmi? They've been known to go bad from time to time.
