USB mouse keeps cutting out

My usb mouse keeps shutting down. I'll hear the Windows tone for something disconnected from the usb port, and the mouse will stop working. But, the red light is still lit. I have to unplug the mouse from the usb, then plug it in again to make it work. I made sure the mouse drivers were updated.
Any ideas on this?
eta: It seems that small moves with the mouse are ok, but whenever I do large move with it, that's when it cuts out.

Try different USB port. Replace mouse.

Tried a different mouse, but the result was the same.

This is clearly the best way to get free help.

There was a recent Windows update that installed some nebulous thing called "Intel Technology Access Service" that is causing stuttering problems with the mouse. Here's one thread on it:

It doesn't seem to be exactly the same as the OP's problem, and in case it doesn't apply, I've pre-emptively fricked off so will require a different insult.

Have you tried restarting your computer? What surface is the mouse on? If it is a reflective surface than try using a mouse pad.
