Unlocking iPhone5s from ATT to Verizon

I'm not tech-savy or anything so I am completely clueless when it comes to this. If I want to unlock my iPhone 5s from ATT and go to Verizon, would I need to purchase another SIM card or would the one I currently have still work with Verizon? Or is that what I'm actually "unlocking" by unlocking an iPhone?

Won't work. Verizon is a different system.
AT&T is GSM (the global standard) - Verizon is proprietary (the older CDMA standard).
(I am a former AT&T customer, current Verizon customer.)
ETA: You need a phone specific to Verizon's network in the U.S.
