I was excited about this 2 years ago. If they can't run android apps then I think it's going to be DOA.
Isn't android technically version of linux anyway?

quote:Not necessarily. Linux has a huge library of software available for it, and I think the goal is to allow most of it to run on Ubuntu phone with relatively minor UI tweaking. Also, rather than focusing on apps, I believe they are taking a different approach called "scopes" that aggregate content for you. Like instead of firing up a particular music app, you would swipe to your music or media scope and play music from a variety of sources. At least that's how I understand it to work.

Instead, it has a software layer (called Android Runtime or ART, which replaced the old one called Dalvik) on top of which all of your apps run. Ubuntu phone runs something much closer to an actual Linux OS.

Why would one want to run an app when they could install full-fledged Linux software on the device?
I want an Ubuntu phone like the one they did the crowd-funding for. It is a phone that you can plug into a dock that has a keyboard, mouse, and monitor hooked up to it and you have a pocket-sized Linux desktop computer.
