Recently brought a Sony XBR 4K tv up from my Sister's house in La. Down there on Direct it had a fantastic picture. Here, on U-Verse the picture is ok but not near as sharp as it was there.
Anyone noticed Direct having a better signal or better picture quality ? With the AT&T package promotions going on for Direct should I look at switching for the pic quality along with saving some money ? I already have AT&T internet, land line and cell service.

Go to Direct Tv because everything is going that way anyways. U-Verse will be completely out the picture by mid 2017 and some point down the road, we're getting rid of the dishes, hopefully by early 2017.

DTV and its not close. The picture quality of DTV is the best in the industry hands down.

My sources are AT&T as I work for them and this was gone over in the job trainings. So... not sure who you're in meetings with but we've literally had training videos on the receivers and how installation is going to be done instead. On top of that, I have two friends who are techs for AT&T and have been told about not doing dish much longer. You may want to start checking in those big wigs or tell your instructors to stop teaching this if it isn't the case.

so you think within the next 3 months they will be doing this? havent heard any of that.

i know dishes will be phased out eventually in stages, but there are no plans to do away with them in 2017

I'll Be curious if everything is moving to OTT (using your own devices like Apple TV) or if DIRECTV will basically manufacture their own streaming devices

Listen, I'm just a sales consultant so I go on what my manager tells me and what I was told in training. Could it be longer than 2017? Probably. I went to training in July and we were told by Spring 2017, dishes would begin to be phased out.

Ok just saying your manager is speculating and nothing I've seen suggests that

I've seen the roadmap to the next 3 years on product development and dishes are involved.

Then get me a promotion and I'll stop spitting this out but this is what my manager tells me so I go from him.

I agree, dishes will be around for a little while longer. I work for AT&T and install both Uverse and DirecTV daily. Uverse is not going anywhere in 2017, it will still be around for customers that don't have line of sight, don't want a dish, etc. As we continue to develop AirGig and other fixed home wireless solutions we will definitely see a move away from both dishes and the existing copper based Uverse service. I have to think it would be at least another 3 years before that but probably longer.

I'm a current Uverse customer, probably going to switch to DirecTV soon. How do they deliver the internet service with DirecTV?

Does the internet still travel over the same wires I have now for Uverse, with video signal coming through the dish?

Also, can I mount the dish on a fence next to my house, opposite the box where the Uverse currently comes into the house? Should I run my own conduit to get the wire from the dish across to the box? I don't want to mount a dish on the side of my house, any options on how to do this best is appreciated.

Any other advice on the switch? Thanks!

Your internet service will be still be delivered over twisted pair copper wire unless you are living in an area where gigapower is active. If it's copper be prepared, the further you are from vrad's (video-ready access device) or co's (central office) the less speed you will be able to get.

As far as the pole we do not mount on fences, a contractor might, but in house does not. Your best bet is to get a 2" outer diameter pole mounted in the ground. It must be 2" outer diameter or the back assembly unit (bau) will not sit properly.

Speed isn't an issue now with Uverse, delivered over wires, and I have an access point to boost the signal upstairs too. It sounds like I shouldn't expect degradation with the switch.

Should I install the pole myself before the switch or does DirectTV do the whole installation at once? I need a view of the southern sky, correct?
