I'm looking for a 50" or larger TV for my living room, and I'm seeing brands like Sceptre and Emerson 55" going for around $400. They all have good reviews, but are not nearly as expensive as LG, Vizio, etc. Has anyone ever used either of these brands, or do you have any recommendations? I'm trying to stay under $600, and it doesn't have to have SmartTV capability (just enough HDMI for a blueray player/cable, and hookups for a soundbar). TIA

Do you mean 60 hertz? The Emerson and other cheap ones will be too

120 and 240 are overrated. Read the reviews

2 hdmi that's up to you. You can always get a hdmi hub

Check slickdeals.net frequently.

Now is a bad time to buy a new TV unless you do like I did: buy a cheap 1080 TV with plans on upgrading in 4-5 years. 4K is getting reasonable, but there is not much 4K media available to take advantage of it. OLED is awesome, but pricey, even at 1080. Plus that OLED 1080 TV will be somewhat obsolete once 4K gets more widespread. 4K OLED is VERY expensive.

So, again, take advantage of the cheap 1080 LED prices now with plans on getting a 4K OLED roundabouts 2020. Don't shy away from those cheap brands. From what I recall, only 3 or 4 factories make the actual display panels for all televisions. Something like Hisense will be fine for a 5 years.

I just bought this exact TV (refurb from Walmart):

It looks great. Don't notice anything that shows that it's anything but a brand new television. Note that it has very wide legs, so you may have to do what I did and spend an extra ~$30 on a center stand.

It just depends on how much you want to spend. I can't tell much of a difference between the cheap ones and the expensive ones. Here's a 50" for 299, I just picked this one up.
