Sounds like just another android box running Kodi.
So legit is not a word I would use. I am sure it would work, but it is nothing special.

Understood. Admittedly, I'm under-educated in this topic...but if I rarely watch ABC, CBS, or NBC (except for sporting events), would something like this take the place of cable TV?

No what you would be looking for is a streaming service such as PlayStation Vue or DirecTV now.
This box will have some live events but it all based on the quality that someone else is willing to stream. It is nothing like flipping through channels on your cable box. You have to know what you are looking for and you have to be willing to put up with some crap.

Over priced android box. There are plenty on Amazon for around $40. Search S905X
