As part of its 2015 Broadband Progress Report, the Federal Communications Commission has voted to change the definition of broadband by raising the minimum download speeds needed from 4Mbps to 25Mbps, and the minimum upload speed from 1Mbps to 3Mbps, which effectively triples the number of US households without broadband access.

good move, but the the bigger ISPs will continue to do what they do best.

Or have you pay for a plan that advertises "up to" 50mbps, which really means "never more than" 5.

Well that's a start, but it's a shame we have to redefine words in order to make just a little bit of technological progress. These things are supposed to take care of themselves in a free market. Unfortunately, the ISP market is anything but "free".

Isp rates have been increasing greatly over the past few years. It's not Japan fast but the rates are going up nicely.

They're going up but the availability is still spotty. I live in downtown Chicago and I only have 1 viable option, Comcast.

My connection still makes the cut. I'd have been pissed to no longer have broadband. Phew! Dodged a bullet there.

Think about it. AT&T will no longer be able to market much of their internet service as broadband.

Good news and all but whats the pricing going to be

Speed. It's gone up about 50% over the past year.

I would like to see two classifications:
High speed internet: 25M down, 3M up
Broadband: 50M down, 10M up
High speed internet: 25M down, 3M up
Broadband: 50M down, 10M up

The "up to" thing needs to be addressed because the telecoms charge for the high end speed regardless of what is actually received.
It's the equivalent of a car dealership selling you a Jaguar at a Jaguar price and when you get home the dealership comes by and replaces it with a Camry while expecting you to keep making the Jag payments.

I just renegotiated with AT&T. 45Mbps and a landline for $59. Without the landline the lowest they could give was $73 for the same Internet.

So politicians play games with definitions too. Imagine that.

this essentially eliminates DSL from the conversation then. 90% of DSL has to be lower than this.

Will it really matter though? In the dialup days, everyone raged about getting "broadband," but in today's world of always-on connections, do most people even really use the term "broadband" anymore?
AT&T already markets their service as "High Speed Internet Access" -- hell, the only place the word "broadband" appears on their U-Verse main webpage is all the way down at the bottom in the footer of the website in the form of a "Broandband Information" link.
