Apple's 2017 iPhone, which is expected to feature premium parts and radical design changes, could cost "north of $1,000," reports Fast Company, citing a source with "knowledge of Apple's plans."

Rumors suggest the upcoming iPhone, which may be called the iPhone 8, will feature an OLED display that's more expensive than traditional LED displays. Other improvements, such as an increase in memory and wireless charging functionality may also drive up the price. It's not hard to imagine the iPhone hitting that price point when the 256GB iPhone 7 Plus is already at $969 in the United States, and previous rumors have also suggested it will be a "premium" device.

Fast Company's source also confirms some iPhone 8 design rumors, describing the device as "something like a smooth black monolith, with few visual interruptions to its sleek design." That jibes with rumors indicating Apple design chief Jony Ive has been aiming for an iPhone that looks like a single sheet of glass with the Home button and Touch ID fingerprint sensor located under the display.

Is this Apple's strategy to fight the commoditization of the smartphone? Who really wants to pay $1000 for a phone?

I mean I guess if they want to price themselves out of the market, that would be one way to do it.

I'm sure they will have some low cost alternative.

Pricing a phone at $1000 is a recipe for failure. I'm an iPhone guy but I'll instantly go for a pixel rather than pay a grand for a phone.

OLEDs display have been on smartphones since 2010. They used to cost 7 times more than those cheap LCD/IPS displays that Apple uses, but not anymore.

OLEDs were the main reason Samsung's cost of production was so much higher than Apple and allowed Apple to have a much higher profit margin.

They sold "premium" devices with cheap and dated hardware. It's only natural that Apple would now switch to actual premium displays since the cost has come down dramatically. Now they can justify a price increase and boost their profit margin since their sales are declining.

How anyone can still buy products from this company is mind blowing. I've never seen a company blatantly cut corners with cheap hardware, purposely change charging ports and remove inputs to sale new connectors and dongles, and hold back features that have been readily available for years.

I don't see why everyone hates Tim Cook this guy an absolute genius and there is nobody better at actual business than this guy. Who else could sale subpar products at that ridiculous price point?

I haven't seen a video of an iPhone blowing up. Maybe Samsung should have stopped constructing their phones with that "premium hardware" and tried to cut down on the life threatening aspects of their product.

Oh, and apple products are extremely reliable. That's how people buy their products.

The problem with OLED isn't the cost as much as Samsung can't make enough screens for both itself and Apple. The premium pricing might be as much about constrained supply as premium parts. Supposedly the 7s will be coming out too as the normally priced alternative.

From the original article:

quote:

And, as usual, it's worth noting that Apple can change the features and specs in an upcoming phone at any time, even late in the production cycle. So while the above preview describes the iPhone 8 as it likely exists today, some features and specs could change before launch day.

Which translates to:

quote:

And, as usual, it's worth noting that this could all be total bullshite. So if it turns out the phone is priced appropriately, this paragraph covers our arse and we'll just blame it on late production cycle changes.

So everyone is paying around $800 now for the newest iPhones. $200 more is going to turn away a good bit of the consumers?

I'll probably be in that boat.

Personally i've already decided against paying $800. I really wanted a pixel but i cannot justify these ridiculous prices. So yeah $1,000 would be way too much for me to invest in a phone.

Ask me in 2 years though and I'm sure i'll have changed my mind.

Yeah I'll be keeping my 6 and waiting for them to work the kinks out of a new design. I never need the latest and greatest anyways.
