I have an old Nexus 7 tablet that I use strictly as an e-reader. Aside from that, I use my Chromebook for everything I do except for work.
Outside of the size and covenience of a small tablet for reading, or gaming (if you're in to that), I would say that Chromebooks have virtually eliminated the need for pure tablets.

I have an iPad mini and a galaxy tab s2 9.7".
Both serve the purpose for which I bought them. I sit in the living room with my wife and daughter in the evening.
I don't have to drag my notebook (xps m1330) in there and I can RDP my desktops if I want real pc power.
I find tablets very useful.
Be sure to get one with micro SD cards. You can cram a lot of magazines and video files on a 200gb micro SD.

I was in the same predicament as you a few months back. I settled on committing to pick up a surface pro 5 when they drop (whenever the hell that actually happens).
