So im a complete dumbass when it comes to technology sometimes. I have an iPhone 6 right now thats on its last leg. I just inherited my brothers old iPhone 6s and want to use that phone now. I have At&T. How do I activate my new phone and get all of the stuff on my old phone to the new one? Do i even have to go to AT&T store to switch to the other phone?

Backup your old phone to a cloud or your computer.

You should be able to load that backup onto the new phone using your iCloud account. This will get all your apps, contacts, settings, etc. onto your new phone.

Then I think all you need to do is switch your SIM card into the new phone. Assuming the 6s was last used on AT&T as well?

If you need more specific instruction than that, let me know.

Only thing I would add is make sure you wipe your brother's old phone completely. Don't just restore it using your saved backup. If you do that you will get weird things that carry over from his phone.

Backup iPhone 6
Swap SIM card to 6s
Wipe 6s
Restore 6s from 6 backup you just made
Should work, if not call ATT to activate 6s
Wipe 6 once all your data is confirmed to be on 6s

I'm still rocking the 5s as well. Planning on upgrading to either a 6s or 7 next month.

I'm in the same boat and my 5s is really on it's last leg, I'm just trying to wait it out. If I'm on a call the screen goes black and I can't do anything, look up anything, switch anything. I'm just dealing right now.

I'm bookmarking this thread though. Thank you for your advice.

Hope you have insurance.

My Home button stopped working without warning Tuesday. I walk into AT&T. They of course tell me they don't do in-store replacements. It's handled by some insurance company. I login into some claim site via my broken phone. Put in a claim. And hear nothing for 2 days. Then am told they will swap my 5S 32GB for a 6 16GB.

I call Asurion (apparent phone insurance company). And I'm pissed the f off, for obvious reasons. This nice lady answers the phone. I calm down. Explain how upset I was that I pay $8 a month for insurance, can't do an in store phone for phone replacement, but have to login to some website, don't hear anything for 36 hours, then am getting downgraded on storage, and won't receive a replacement til Friday or Saturday. I was polite. And told her this just didn't seem fair or ethical. It wasn't a reasonable trade for someone who pays $8/month for insurance and hasn't submitted a claim EVER.

.....She just up and says, "Okay, how about this. We'll send you a 64GB iPhone 6 and a matching case for your hassle. What's your address sir?"

I was kind of in shock for a moment, because I was fully expecting having to drop some f bombs and call her a couple of nasty words, then get disappointed.
Nope, being polite, instead of hot headed a-hole paid off for once.

.....something to keep in mind. And here's a shout out to my girl Roxanne over at Asurion
