I switched from VW to AT&T last year. They were running a promotion that my sister told me about, and we ended up with a pair of iPhones and an iPad mini. The mini was $49 if you bought an iPhone.

A buddy of mine works for VW and was telling me about them buying out contracts to get people to switch. I'm guessing up to a certain amount per line.

A couple of questions, would the iPad work on VW data plan? Is the fact that I was a fairly recent customer of theirs make it to where I may not be eligible for this?

I'm on the AT&T Next plan. I think it was the 24 month upgrade plan where I make 30 device payments. So roughly 18 months left on the phones.

Really thinking about switching from an iPhone to one of the new Samsungs. Plus they're running some deal now where if you buy the Note 7 you get a huge memory card with it.

No, AT&T and VW use different technology that aren't compatible.

Even on the tablets? I thought that was just the smartphones.

While it's true they use different radio tech, the answer is not always "no" these days. Many (most?) phones and tablets have both radios in them and will work on either network with the right SIM card. I'm pretty sure the iPad mini will work on Verizon.

There's a good chance if you break(buy out) that contract you will owe the full value of the iPad since you bought it on a promo. VW isn't going to pay for that.

Verizon told me I could move from AT&T with my iPhone 6 with no problem.

ETA: are they currently buying out the contracts? If so, I will switch today.

Once you're contract and/or next plan is up the devices are open to do as you please.

I did some digging around yesterday on the AT&T site. My phones aren't eligible for upgrade on Next until March 2018, which is the 30 month plan I referenced earlier. But it says the iPad can be upgraded at any time.

When I checked ETF fees, it wasn't that bad. It reduces by $5 each month. It was really the price of the phones that I have left. And I could make a one time payment and upgrade those, either the full amount I have left and they'd be mine to do with as I please, or a lower one time payment and I'd return them to AT&T and upgrade on the Next Plan if I stayed with them. So I think I could switch to Verizon, get the ETF and device payments covered, then sell the phones unlocked or bring one to VW and sell the other one. There is no contract on the iPad, it is just added to my data plan as of now. Nothing on there about it being a promo since I would have fully paid for the iPhone.

I am fairly certain the Verizon contract buyout plan requires you to port and trade in your current phone (with a contract or payment balance) and purchase a new 4G LTE smartphone (on a payment plan) with them. If you sell the phone you can't get the "up to $650" gift card. I did this about 3 months ago, so maybe things are different now.

I called today. You have to trade in your current phone for the payoff amount and start over on an installment plan with Verizon.

Just use your phone as a WiFi hotspot and use the iPad that way.

AT&T, VZW, And Tmobile all share lte bands 2 and 4. Vzw LTE devices are already carrier unlocked as well. A Tmobile or AT&T sim will work in Verizon LTE devices without having to have an unlock code.

Sprint is the only carrier that doesn't have any of the same LTE bands as the other carriers. Sprint phones will work on Verizon for talk and text, but not LTE data.

I switched to Verizon from AT&T today.

I had to sign up for a contract with a new phone (couldn't bring my Galaxy S7 since it was incompatible)

To get the rebate you have to trade your old phone in online to get up to $300 credit, then after you get your last bill you have to send a copy to Verizon to get the rest, up to $650 total.

I'm happy with the signal strength so far. I'm up to 4 bars from 1-2 with AT&T.
