Stanford study: T-Mobile's Binge On is 'likely illegal'

The debate over the potential harm of T-Mobile's Binge On continues, with a new study from Stanford University claiming that the perk violates key net neutrality principles and is "likely illegal." Binge On lets T-Mobile subscribers watch videos from streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu without eating into their data plan. It's proved popular with users, with T-Mobile claiming video views on its network have "more than doubled" since the deal was introduced, but critics say it's creating a tiered internet service, with the Uncarrier given the unfair advantage of deciding who wins and who loses.
Schewick's paper collects together many of the primary arguments against Binge On, including the allegation that it constrains consumer choice, penalizing customers who want to use unsupported rival services. For example, Binge On supports Vevo TV for watching music videos, but doesn't make YouTube or Vimeo available; it supports Ustream for live-streaming video, but not Meerkat or Periscope. The study also suggests that technical requirements to sign up to Binge On are more complicated than T-Mobile claims, and that the carrier is tilting the playing field to the advantage of larger firms.

It seems great now, but fast forward a few decades and to pay for this subsidized video means that all video content has to be aimed at the lowest common denominator. You won't be binging Breaking Bad on NetFlix, you'll be mindlessly laughing at Ow! My Balls! You get what you pay for you eventually.

The garbage these kids watch. I put youtube on my daughter's leappad epic and she would watch that shite all day, had I not put a time limit on the app. She has a pile of her own barbies but would rather watch other people playing with theirs on youtube.

WTF IS THAT??
is it the annoying nasally bitch who talks the whole time she's playing with barbies or playdoh?
our 7yo will watch that shite for hours if we don't stop her.

fricking yes, Sandra from DisneyCarToys. I was horrified to learn that she has a TWIN SISTER who has her own toy channel called AllToyCollector: LINK
My 4-year-old also likes the "Come play with me" channel, where two Canadian girls play with barbies and over-enunciate everything.
She gets lost in the YouTube vortex and discovers new channels, each more annoying than the last.
EDIT: But yes, I am jealous that these toy review/unboxing/parody channels have millions upon millions of views.

HOW DID THESE KIDS FIND THIS shite???
i'm quite certain my kid hasn't talked to your kid.
i think there's some kind of subliminal mind control at work.

They are unbelievably popular. It starts by looking for videos related to Frozen, Peppa Pig, whatever, etc. and inevitably there will be a video on the sidebar with toys of those characters, and then... youtube vortex.

Wow, this thread immediately took a turn to the ridiculous.
As far as BingeOn and the slippery slope theorists, I just don't see it. It's nothing like what At&t, Verizon, and Comcast are trying to do.
Content providers are loving BingeOn with ~40 or so already signed up ranging in size from absolutely huge to small niche providers. Customers are loving it and video viewing has doubled for Tmo customers. Tmo has actually reduced total throughput on their network even with the increase in video viewing. Any content provider can join for free and the technical spefications appear to be pretty simple to join the program. It's also a free service to customers. All of that makes the program seem pretty neutral to me, and to top it off customers can disable the feature anytime they choose.
Some people are upset that it's an opt-out program rather than opt-in, but making it opt-out makes the most sense for Tmo and most of it's customers. The complaints they would have received and comped data they would have given to customers who blew their caps expecting data to be zero-rated would have been enormous. Not mention the bad pub from a much bigger group than a few diehard techies that don't like BingeOn now.
