The board design sucks and it's a format for illegal stuff and drama that only exists on the internet. SJW wouldn't be a thing if it wasn't for them.

I've never gotten reddit.

Reddit and 4chan are big deals only because of the people there and the shite they manage to pull off sometimes.

The pages though?

They are like 2005 internet.

I'll never understand why Chicken doesn't license TD's layout.

It is the best on the interwebs as far as message boards go.

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. Reddit is definitely pretty shitty, but plenty of forum software out there (even the well known vBulletin and PHPBB) shite all over this forum. It's perfectly functional for what is, but its limited capabilities really give it an obvious home-brewed feel. Not trying to be overly negative toward it because I certainly couldn't build anything remotely similar from scratch, but when I'm posting extended guides/advice/instructions I can't help but lament the inadequate formatting options. And another gripe I have is the lack of grace period on the "edit" timestamp. Like, if I post something and it hasn't been read by anyone else yet, would be nice to make a quick edit without the edit stamp. This is pretty standard with most forum software. And even Reddit implements a simple 3-minute rule.

Though I understand that there are still Rant and OT posters to deal with, and if we had even simple options like font color and size adjustments, people would abuse the shite out of it.

You can't really lump Reddit into a narrow personality type like you can with 4chan. Aside from the usual front-page popular subreddits, there are another 5000+ other subreddits with users of varying interests from all over the world. That said, it still kind of sucks sometimes. Not the type of forum I can tolerate for long periods of time.

The amount of content that reddit has is unmatched by any board that i've ever seen. The format may be from the 90s but you dont go there to look at the pictures....it's all about the articles.

You should check out /r/tumblrinaction

an entire subreddit dedicated to mocking SJW

edit: as someone mentioned above. reddit enahancemen suite really helps browsing the website.

What sucks about it? The look? I guess it's "plain" or even ugly, but functionally it is pretty damn nice.

it's a format for illegal stuff
It's for "illegal stuff" as much as it's for legal stuff. It's just for any and everything. We could start a TD subreddit (no wait.. as usual, someone already did).

OK. The best part of the site is the comments, and this is likely the most common specific complaint about poor layout. But once you get the hang of it, it's a lot easier to follow along. The main thing is comments are voted on just like submitted links, so the best rise to the top. The second thing is the comments are nested rather than chronological, which really helps to organize the conversation (could you imagine if every thread on TD was like a 20 page OT lunch thread?). If it helps, you can click the - next to a comment to collapse that thread and "clean up" what you're looking at.

It works well for what this site is about. This layout on reddit would be an absolute disaster. There is so much wasted space that you would scroll/click for days. Chronological posts without nesting would make it impossible to follow the scores of little sub-conversations that take place in one thread.

I mean, could you imagine what this site would be like with 100 times as many users? Now imagine that clusterfrick multiplied by 100 again, and that's what reddit deals with.

I always liked the nested thread style better than the linear style.

The jumping around of comments by the votes throws me off however... because oftentimes a comment about something that happened earlier in time ends up ahead of the post it was commenting on.... and without an easy way to reference the original, it gets me out of whack.

reddit fosters groupthink. the response to a dominant view taking over a sub leads to another sub of the opposing view, where they dominate

i'm not a fan of the default design, either, but i understand that with so many people it's a necessary evil. having a coherent discussion, with the format + groupthink, is difficult. that's my biggest issue

i've never had a problem with this in non-nested formats but i get the problem with a quantity increase

I think the voting system is hilarious. A lot of subreddits will remind you to use the downvote button for comments that aren't relevant or don't add to the discussion, not for comments you simply don't like/agree with. But that's almost exclusively what people use it for.

i like to use reddit for comedy/entertainment purposes only, like blackpeopletwitter or the fappening (RIP)

there is a term for mass downvoting. i just found it a few days ago reading an article about the subs that showcase pics of dead, pretty girls

There are multiple sorting methods, including chronological. Choose the one you like best

reddit fosters groupthink.

Every social community fosters groupthink.

When you create a peer group in real life, you're fostering groupthink. You're not going to befriend individuals that have diametrically opposed views relative to your own. So, you befriend those people, make a comment on how Obama is the worst president of all time, everyone agrees and provides you with positive reinforcement. This solidifies your views and makes it more likely for you to engage in such thought patterns in the future, since, after all, you received some pretty good feedback by thinking that way before.

At least on reddit you can subscribe to a parallel subreddit with opposing views on a given subject. And for the record, the groupthink on the Political Board on this site is far worse than the groupthink in any subreddit on reddit.
