My deadbolt is messed up and I'm going to replace it so I started thinking of a smart lock since I have an Echo.

Seems like you have to spend >$200 to get one and I don't know how good they are. Anyone with Alexa have one and recommend a brand? I know about August, didn't seem to work that well when I was at a friend's place.

TIA

People need to understand the Echo is not some all encompassing home automation machine.

now that i have said that, Smart locks are the greatest thing ever. i love not having to carry a house key anymore. I have mine hooked up to my automation system to stay locked while im at work or while im asleep encase i ever were to forget.

Really? My friend has August and it works like a champ. it appears to work with Alexa as well. Here's a quote from a quick google

quote:

This means that you can say to your Amazon Echo speaker, "Alexa, lock the door" and, provided that your Amazon and August devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, the door will lock. ... A few things worth noting: first, this is the first smart lock Alexa works with.Jul 28, 2016

Have 4 Schlage Camelot deadbolts. Greatest thing ever. Have them set to lock at certain times so I can't fall asleep with the doors open. You can buy new off eBay for about 115. Retail is 199.00.

I didn't say Alexa was any of that, just figure if I get a smart lock it would be nice if it worked with it.

Based on my recent experience with August as a guest I'd be scared to go without a key in case that thing didn't let me in

How do you like it? Maybe there was just some issue with my friend's but it didn't make me feel confident. Reviews on Amazon back up lots of people having issues and lots of people having none

So all one needs to do to get into your home is point a directional speaker inside your home from just outside the window with a recording that says to unlock your door? I hope the alarm isnt going to be hooked up to this thing as well.

doesn't work that way anymore kingfish. All the smart hub companies figured that issue out early on and removed the "unlock" voice activated command. You can still unlock your door from your phone or other triggers, just not voice unless you cook up something on your own using IFTTT. Same with garage door.

The media loves to be an echo chamber and damn the facts. After all some blogger is smarter than the engineers at Apple, Amazon and Google right? This couldn't possibly be fixed by commenting out a single line of code if it was even there in the first place?

I've got Kevo's installed on all my deadbolts. One had an issue unlocking and locking randomly on its own, but they replaced the unit quickly. The system sucks if you're just using it via Bluetooth and your phone. Slow, doesn't always connect easily, etc. Once you pay for Kevo Plus so you can unlock via wifi, it's a game changer. Now that they're connected to the internet they work flawlessly and I can't imagine living without them.

How hard is it to change the batteries and how long does it last?

Or they could ... Gasp.... Break a window..... Or kick the door. But i am sure thieves are carrying loudspeakers around in hopes someone has alexa.

Echo works with our alarm system as well. They purposely have it set to where you can set it, but you can't disarm it using Alexa.

Takes all of ten seconds to replace the two AA batteries. There's a battery compartment on the back which does not require you to disassemble. I've had them for around 6-7 months and have not needed to change them yet.
