SIM question

I just got my new phone in the mail and am shipping the old one back to VW(I'm on the edge plan). This may be a dumb question, but am I supposed to remove the SIM before shipping it back or do I leave it in? I did all the factory resets and what it, but wasn't sure about the SIM.

If the SIM is deactivated, it doesn't really matter. They don't need it.
