Sony does a lot of what Apple wants to do

1) PlayStation Vue streaming cable service
2) Owns a decent collection TV shows and Movies, including a streaming service (Crackle) with original content
3) Owns a decent collection of music
4) Owns a popular gaming platform
5) Has hardware production overlap that could lead to even better supply chain economics, a big part of Apple's success
6) Designs and makes it's own chips, screens, cameras, etc.

Honestly I don't think I'd like the things that Apple would do to Sony. I'm also not sure if it's a great business decision because Sony wouldn't be cheap, but Apple is just sitting on all that cash and Sony does seem to fit a lot of Apple's unfulfilled wishes.

I imagine that would cost an insane amount for Apple to acquire Sony. Google paid 12.5 billion for just Motorola mobility, so I figure Sony would be much more then that

Sony's market cap is $47 Billion. Apple has $250 Billion in cash reserves. They could do it and it seems like a nice fit, I'm not sure how cost effective it'd be though. I also assume Apple could have a PS Vue like service tomorrow if they really wanted one, but I'm guessing they aren't getting the profitable terms they want and Apple Vue would be as much as regular cable.

That is what we need is to have the PS4 require Apple Accessories

I did say I wouldn't like what Apple would do to Sony, but as I was subjected to the 20th Crackle commercial for their original show Snatch, I began thinking Crackle would probably make Sony more money as part of someone else's streaming service. I've watched a few things on Crackle including original shows but I rarely go back because of the commercials and it being a separate app I never use.

My first thought was NetFlix or Amazon buying it, but they're already pretty leveraged for growth and don't have the cash for that. Then I thought of Apple and all of the hardware synergies stood out as well.

You act like Sony doesn't do this to some degree. I've never owned a PS, but my old Sony camera used a Memory Stick instead of an SD card. Sony lost the VHS/Beta competition, but won the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle. I think in both cases the superior format lost.

Not to over-simplify things, and I may be wrong, but I think the reason Apple has so much cash is due to the taxation of bringing foreign cash back to the US. They would have to pay tax on the cash on top of the foreign taxes paid.

When you have as much money as apple, why not just buy Sony?

Besides Apple, Sony is the worst company out there for proprietary shite.

Sony would never sell to Apple. Apple doesn't have the money to pay the premium Sony would demand even if there was a price.

Steve jobs used Sony as a model for company culture and productivity.

I don't know all the intricacies of stocks, but as a publicly traded company Sony's management may not have much choice in the matter. Apple could just acquire a majority stake in Sony on the open market.

Sony is not doing well outside of Playstation. The movie division alone lost around $700 million dollars last year. I know there's been rumors about Amazon wanting to get into the video game industry. They would buy Playstation if it were available but the whole company isn't worth it.
