I have a Cox DVR, Yamaha receiver, Vizio m50 tv. I can play anything from the Cox DVR through my receiver surround sound but when I try and watch a movie with Netflix app on the tv it will not play through the receiver. Nor will any other app work as well except on the TV speakers.

I thought that is what the CEC setting on the TV was for but it doesn't work. I have tried multiple HDMI cables with no luck as well. What am I doing wrong?

What's the model number of the yamaha receiver?

If it supports ARC (audio return channel), then the same HDMI cable that connects the receiver to the TV should pass the audio back to the receiver.

If doesn't support ARC, then you'd need to use the optical audio out from the TV to the receiver.

What else do you have connected to your receiver? When I upgraded to a smart tv, I connected all of my other devices to my tv instead of my receiver and use the ARC feature to transmit sound from my tv to receiver.
