Server 2012 Standard - machine boots to "Choos your keyboard layout", then goes to "Choose an option" with options "Troubleshoot" and "Turn off your PC"

The troubleshooting options include a cmd prompt, and options to repair, restore, re-image, etc. Repair fails. Re-image just gives an internal error.

Having dealt with Windows for quite some time now, the fact that the repair options don't do anything is no surprise at all to me.

What does surprise me, however, is if I open a cmd prompt, open diskpart, and do "list disks" I get "No fixed disks present". Oh really motherfricker? How am I getting to this Server 2012 (same as Windows 8) Troubleshooting boot menu if there are no fricking fixed disks present? I'm not booting from anything else you fricktard.

I don't know what the hell is going on. The machine has an Areca RAID card, configured with RAID 5. The controller was screaming when the customer arrived because one of the disks failed. I replaced the drive, it took about 10 minutes to rebuild (SSDs) so it appears that the RAID controller is functioning properly but obviously something is fricked up. Probably a partition table or something, but why doesn't diskpart show any disks?

Of course the customer does not know where his Server 2012 installation disk is so I'm currently downloading that. I have a good backup from last night which I'm planning on restoring from.

Any other ideas? FML.

Seems like you're on the right track for restoring it...

As far as troubleshooting the problem though, is it more important to get it up and back into production, or figure out what caused the issue..

Reboot it and go into the raid card and check the array. Hopefully it's okay.

I had this exact problem last week. I just configured a RAID array, installed Server 2012, and then on boot up, it said there were no disks present.

I really didn't have time to figure out the problem, so I reinstalled Server 2012 from scratch and that fixed it.

Hopefully restoring a backup will work too.

Well I'm downloading from Microsoft, so I've got a couple of hours to bang on it.

Doesn't 2012 add in a recovery partition to every install? This could be what you are seeing on boot.

I may be off, but I think you sometimes have to manually load a storage driver in the recovery environment to actually see the raid array.

I thought about that. I don't see a way to load drivers, though.

From LINK:

1. Boot from Windows 8 DVD or flash drive.
2. Choose "Install Windows 8".
3. Enter activation code, agree with License Agreement etc. until you will be able to load your driver.
4. Load the driver. After this point cancel installation.
5. You will be moved to the first screen. Choose "Repair this computer".
6. Now you will be able to access your HDD and restore computer from existing restore point.

Worth a go maybe. I hear you though - the recovery environment is hot garbage.

Just discovered the cmd line tool drvload and loaded the drivers. Bootrec completed successfully, but it's still booting into recovery mode/whatever you call it. Trying a few things now that I can get diskpart to recognize the drive
